Transportation Changes FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Intra-district Transfer Transportation
Can my intradistrict transfer student still ride the bus?

While families are responsible for transportation, an intradistrict transfer student may request to ride a District 196 school bus (using the proper forms, Procedure 707.7.1P) if specific conditions are met. In order to ride a district bus, the following four conditions must be present:

  1. There is an existing bus route within the school attendance area or zone.
  2. The student can consistently get to an existing bus stop.
  3. No rerouting of buses is necessary.
  4. Unassigned space is available on the bus.

With many changes being made to improve transportation reliability, all district transportation will be rerouted prior to the start of the 2026-27 school year. Rerouting for efficiency will mean that some stops that existed this year will not exist next year. Families requesting transportation for an intradistrict transfer may not receive a bus stop until all routing is complete (mid-August). Families are advised not to count on stops or transportation services that may have been available this year.
