District 196 is committed to providing a free and appropriate public education to each student with a disability within the school district’s jurisdiction. It is the intent of the district to ensure that students who have disabilities within the definition of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are identified, evaluated, and provided with appropriate education services.
What is Section 504?
Section 504 is a Civil Rights Law that prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities by agencies receiving federal dollars
Requires evaluations and 504 educational plans for qualifying students with disabilities.
Who is eligible for protections under Section 504?
A student with a physical or mental impairment that causes a substantial limitation of a major life activity.
What is a physical or mental impairment?
Any psychological disorder or condition, cosmetic disfigurement, or anatomical loss affecting one or more of the following body systems: Neurological, musculoskeletal, special sense organ, respiratory, including speech organs, cardiovascular, reproductive, digestive, genitor-urinary, hemic and lymphatic, skin and endocrine, any mental or psychological disorder (such as mental retardation, organic brain syndrome, emotional or mental illness, and specific learning disabilities).
What are Major Life Activities?
Examples of major life activities include: Caring for oneself; performing manual tasks; seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, and working; and the operation of a major bodily function.
