District 196 is located in the southern suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul. It is the third largest school district in Minnesota, serving approximately 29,000 students and more than 150,000 total residents. The district’s 110 square miles encompass all or part of the cities of Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan, Burnsville, Coates, Empire, Inver Grove Heights and Lakeville, and Vermillion township. We are proud of the diverse backgrounds that make up our students, families and staff.
Did you know? There are over 100 different languages spoken by our families in District 196. The top two languages spoken at home other than English are Spanish and Somali. Approximately 9 percent of our families speak one of these two languages. (2018-19 MDE school data)
We are committed to ensuring all families have access to the resources they need to be successful in a language they can understand. Our English Learner program supports multilingual learners in acquiring the English they need in order to succeed in the classroom and beyond, in accordance with the State of Minnesota Guidelines and English Language Proficiency Standards. Adults have access to a variety of English language learning classes through Community Education.
