Extended School Year (ESY)
School districts are required to provide extended school year (ESY) services which are a type of special education instruction given on days when school is not in session for all students. A student can receive the ESY services if it is included in their individualized education plan (IEP). Every year a student's IEP team should determine if the student needs ESY services.
Registration
Please contact your case manager for registration information. If you are looking to register for ESY after the last day of school, please contact ESY Leads at esyleads@district196.org or 651-423-0696.
What parents need to know about Extended School Year (ESY) Services
Secondary ESY (Grades 6-12+)
ESY services are provided to students that qualify. The IEP team considers ESY eligibility and services at each annual IEP meeting. For students eligible, services are written in the IEP and provided in the areas for which the student qualified.
Elementary ESY (K-5)
Elementary (K-5) ESY is a partial day of school with a schedule that includes services in literacy, math, and social emotional learning support. The instructional activities are developed to address the ESY goals of the individuals within the class. It is staffed by special education teachers and paraprofessionals to address ESY programming needs as identified by the IEP team at the annual IEP meeting.
Food Service
When registering for ESY, parents/guardians are prompted to indicate if they will purchase a meal or bring one from home.
Parents/guardians may want to verify that the ESY teacher working with their student has information related to food allergies in Infinite Campus if your child has documented food allergy and/or other health related information on file.
Transportation
Special education transportation is available for eligible students who receive District 196 transportation during the school year and reside in District 196 boundaries.
Transportation information (bus number, pick up time, drop off time, etc.) will be emailed and/or mailed two weeks before the start of ESY. If you have questions about ESY transportation you can contact the ESY Lead team at esyleads@district196.org or 651-423-0696.
If your student will be absent during ESY, please inform your child’s teacher AND transportation at 651-423-7685.
