707.4P - Student Transportation Fee-For-Service Registration
If your student goes to their attendance area school, but lives a mile or less from their elementary school 1.5 miles or less than from their middle or high school and doesn't qualify for free bus service, you can pay for a seat on the bus through the Pay-to-Ride program.
Who Can Sign Up?
Families can pay for bus service if their student goes to their assigned attendance area school (or a daycare in that area) but lives in the "walk-zone." To qualify, you must:
- Live or have a daycare inside the school's attendance area boundary
- Pay a yearly fee by June 30, before the school year starts.
- New students have 30 days from enrolling to sign up for Pay-to-Ride
Important Details
- Hazardous Crossings: If your student has to cross a road that District 196 has determined to be dangerous, they qualify for free bus service.
- Transfer Students: If you choose to have your student go to school outside of their attendance area, you generally cannot use the Pay-to-Ride program
Summary:
- Student qualifies for bus service if they live more than 1 mile from elementary or 1.5 miles from middle or high school
- Family can sign up for Pay-to-Ride if student lives in the "walk-zone" (1 mile or less from elementary or 1.5 miles or less from middle or high school. Fee must be paid by June 30, prior to school starting)
- Student qualifies for free bus service if they live in the "walk-zone" but would have to cross a road that District 196 has determined to be dangerous
- Intradistrict transfer student (attending a school other than their attendance area school) does not qualify for bus service or Pay-to-Ride.
- Magnet school students (Glacier Hills and Cedar Park Elementary) who live within the correct zone will receive free bus service to their school. Read more about magnet transportation changes.
- Open-enrolled students (do not live within District 196 boundaries) do not qualify for Pay-to-Ride, but can complete an interdistrict transportation request form. Families are responsible to get their student to a bus stop closest to the boundary of the school.
