Twelve candidates seek four open seats on District 196 School Board

Twelve District 196 residents had filed candidacy for four open seats on the School Board of Independent School District 196 when the two-week filing period ended at 5 p.m. Aug. 13. The candidates include three of the four incumbents, one former District 196 School Board member and eight other challengers. 

The candidates for the Nov. 5, 2019 School Board election are incumbents Joel Albright of Apple Valley, Sachin Isaacs of Burnsville and Jackie Magnuson of Rosemount, and challengers Maggie Bruecken of Apple Valley, Rebecca Gierok of Apple Valley, Curtis Henry of Rosemount, Laura Holm of Rosemount, former board member Gary Huusko of Eagan, Cory Johnson of Eagan, Angela Noonan of Eagan, Kristin Schaub of Apple Valley, and Hannibal Smith of Apple Valley.

Bob Schutte, a 27-year member of the board, announced at the board’s Aug. 12 meeting that he would not be seeking another term. His last regular meeting will be Dec. 9, 2019.

The terms of Albright, Isaacs, Magnuson and Schutte expire Jan. 6, 2020. The term of each position up for election this November is four years, from January 2020 to January 2024.

The League of Women Voters Dakota County has scheduled a District 196 Candidate Forum for Wednesday, Oct. 9, 7-8:30 p.m., at Rosemount City Hall. The forum will be recorded for playback on District 196 TV and available to stream on the District 196 YouTube channel. 

District 196 voters can vote on the School Board election and levy referendum question by absentee ballot beginning Sept. 20 through Nov. 4. In-person absentee balloting will be available at the District Office in Rosemount and at all Dakota County service centers. Early voting will also be offered the week before the election at the District Office and the Dakota County Government Center in Hastings. Polls in the 14 combined school district precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
