District 196 turns orange in recognition of Unity Day 2019

District 196 students and staff stood up for kindness and spoke out against bullying on Oct. 23 in recognition of Unity Day. The annual day is held in conjunction with National Bullying Prevention Month efforts each October.

A wave of orange could be seen throughout the district, as schools put up kindness trees, held all-school assemblies, participated in activities and learned about how to be advocates for kindness.

At Greenleaf Elementary, Viktor the Viking and the Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders kicked off their Greenleaf Cares initiative with an anti-bullying presentation. East Lake Elementary third graders paired up with their kindergarten buddies and shared ways to make their classroom inclusive. At Woodland Elementary, their annual Unity Day assembly featured student musical performances.

"Unity Day continues to grow in our district each year," said Mary Thompson, district safety and climate coordinator. "It's so encouraging to see so many of our students and staff participating by wearing orange and engaging in activities that foster safe and inclusive learning environments."
