1. Beliefs

1.1  Information literacy is critical for lifelong learning.

1.2 Learners must be skilled in accessing, processing, evaluating and communicating information.

1.3 Learning must be resource based, active and integrated.

1.4 Information-literate learners integrate technology skills, reading and media literacy skills, and demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues such as plagiarism, copyright and intellectual freedom into the research process.

1.5 Access to information, the technology that delivers it and the skills in using it, are essential in our society.

1.6 Media specialists are information partners with mainstream teachers in the instructional process. The media specialist has four responsibilities: teacher, instructional partner, information specialist and program administrator.

1.7 Reading is the foundation for all learning.  Media specialists play a vital role in helping to develop literacy competencies in all students and foster self-motivated readers.

1.8 Media specialists must create an environment that promotes a love of reading for knowledge and pleasure.

1.9 Strong administrative support and understanding of the media program’s role is essential.

1.10 All students will participate in an articulated K-12 media curriculum.

1.11 All students and staff must have access to a professionally designed, developed and maintained collection of information resources, including print, audio-visual and current technology.

1.12 An automated media resource management system for accessing and sharing resources throughout the district must be current and maintained.

1.13 Students and staff will have flexible access to a licensed media professional in a media center throughout the school day.

1.14 The students will understand and apply the knowledge and skills of media and information technologies through the following:

1.14.1 Identifying, selecting and locating appropriate resources;

1.14.2 Analyzing and organizing research to communicate information in a relevant format, and

1.14.3 Demonstrating a respect for ownership and copyright of information resources.

2. Goals

Students will know and be able to do the following:

2.1 Reading and Media Literacy

2.1.1 Students will select materials and read for educational and personal goals.

2.1.2 Students will appreciate literature and understand literary conventions.

2.1.3 Students will critically evaluate print and electronic resources.

2.2 Research Process – Students will follow a systematic research process that involves formulating a question and gathering, evaluating and organizing information. Students will draw conclusions, present results to an audience and evaluate both the product and the process.

2.3 Responsible Use of Information and Technology

2.3.1 Students will understand ethical and safety issues related to information use, including plagiarism, source citation, copyright, intellectual freedom, acceptable use of school technologies, privacy and evaluation of information.

2.3.2 Students will use resources responsibly.

2.3.3 Students will use resources to learn both independently and in collaboration with others.

2.3.4 Students will select and use appropriate technology for educational and personal goals.
