1. Responsibilities
1.1 The District 196 departments of elementary education and secondary education are responsible for notifying principals about the specific courses in which the human growth and development curriculum and/or the sexually transmitted infections and diseases prevention curriculum are taught.
1.2 Each principal is responsible for notifying parents, in advance, about the courses that will be taught during the coming school year that include the human growth and development curriculum and/or sexually transmitted infections and diseases prevention curriculum.
1.2.1 Elementary Schools
1.2.1.1 Elementary schools will make the district’s human growth and development, curricula available for parents to review prior to the time that it is taught at school.
1.2.1.2 Elementary schools will include the following statement in their calendar, handbook or some other publication that is sent to all parents early in the school year: "District 196 teaches a human growth and development curriculum to fourth and fifth grade students. If you would like more specific information about what is taught in this area, please contact your school principal. Parents who are uncomfortable with the curriculum after reviewing it or talking with the principal may withhold their children from specific class sessions in which the curriculum is taught."
1.2.2 Middle schools will include the following statement in their calendar/handbook or some other publication that is mailed to all parents early in the school year: "District 196 teaches students human growth and development curriculum and sexually transmitted infections and diseases prevention curriculum in seventh grade health classes. If you would like specific information about what is taught, please attend one of the meetings on these programs at your school or contact your school principal. Parents who are uncomfortable with either curriculum after talking with the principal may withhold their children from specific class sessions in which these curricula are taught."
1.2.3 High schools will indicate in their course catalogs each course which includes the human growth and development curriculum and/or sexually transmitted infections and diseases prevention curriculum. The following statement will also be included in the course catalog: "District 196 teaches students human growth and development curriculum and sexually transmitted infections and diseases prevention curriculum. Course descriptions in this catalog identify where this curriculum is taught. If you would like specific information about what is taught in these areas, please contact your school principal. Parents who are uncomfortable with the curriculum after talking with the principal may withhold their student from specific class sessions in which these curricula are taught."
2. Alternative Instruction
If a parent, guardian or adult student objects to the content of specific instructional material, he or she may make reasonable arrangements for alternative instruction with the principal of the school the student attends, as described in district Policy 603, section 5, Parent Review of Instructional Materials.
