1. Placement Consideration
1.1 Placement request from teacher or parent – A teacher or parent requesting consideration for possible single subject acceleration of a student will request review by the referral team by completing Procedure 602.6.2.1P, Request for Consideration of Single Subject Acceleration.
1.1.1 The referral team will be made up of the classroom teacher, gifted and talent development teacher, principal and content area coach.
1.1.2 The referral team will meet to review the request and complete Procedure 602.6.2.2P, Referral Team Summary for Single Subject Acceleration. The referral team will determine the request for consideration to be appropriate if the student is a current student attending a district school and meets initial criteria based on district administered assessments.
1.1.3 If the referral team determines the request to be appropriate, Procedure 602.6.2.3P, Permission for Consideration of Single Subject Acceleration, will be completed. If the referral team determines the request to not be appropriate, Procedure 602.6.2.4P, Denial of Consideration for Single Subject Acceleration, will be completed.
1.2 Routine math placement screening – All students in grades 5 and 6 are screened for appropriate middle school math placement for the following year.
1.3 Other opportunities for middle school math placement – A parent and student may request additional opportunities to show proficiency through further assessments provided by the middle school or high school. Appropriate placement will be determined by the school, if appropriate.
2. Assessment
If permission for consideration is granted, a six-week intervention period will take place to determine if the student’s needs can be met in the current placement through program changes or modifications. Following the six-week intervention period, assessment data will be collected and reported on Procedure 602.6.2.5P, Report of Data Collection for Consideration of Single Subject Acceleration.
3. Meeting
A meeting, including the parent(s) or guardian(s), principal, classroom teacher(s), content area coach and gifted and talent development teacher, will follow the data collection and assessment. The student’s parent(s) or guardian(s) will be notified about the meeting, using Procedure 602.6.2.6P, Notice of Meeting for Consideration of Single Subject Acceleration.
3.1 A recommendation to grant or deny the single subject acceleration will result from the meeting.
3.2 The meeting results will be recorded on Procedure 602.6.2.7P, Meeting Summary for Consideration of Single Subject Acceleration.
3.3 If the single subject acceleration is approved, the gifted and talent development teacher will complete Procedure 602.6.2.8P, Transition Plan for Single Subject Acceleration.
4. Transportation
When a single subject acceleration implementation requires a change in assigned school, the student’s parent(s) or guardian(s) will be responsible for transportation to the new school site.
5. Record-keeping
5.1 Copies of Procedure 602.6.2.7P, Meeting Summary for Consideration of Single Subject Acceleration and Procedure 602.6.2.8P, Transition Plan for Single Subject Acceleration, will be distributed as follows:
5.1.1 Student’s cumulative folder;
5.1.2 Director of teaching and learning, and
5.1.3 If single subject acceleration was approved, student information supervisor.
5.2 All single subject acceleration files are kept in a central location in the student’s school of attendance with other case study files in a section labeled “Single Subject Acceleration.”
