1. Definition
For the purpose of this regulation, "school activities and events” shall include, but not be limited to: cocurricular athletics, fine and performing arts and clubs and school-sponsored events including assemblies, dances, graduation, homecoming and advisory councils.
2. Degree of Participation
2.1 Each student’s degree of participation in a school activity or event will be determined by the teacher, coach, director or advisor of the particular activity on the basis of the student’s physical ability, condition, behavior in school and in the community, and other factors which the teacher, coach, director or advisor deems advisable, after consultation with the principal or designee.
2.2 Students will not be excluded from school activities and events on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, disability, status with regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, gender identity or age.
3. Rules, Expectations and Participation Conditions
Rules, expectations and conditions for participation in each activity or event will be determined by the school and communicated to students.
3.1 Students who participate in activities or events are expected to follow the rules, expectations and conditions, and adhere to the behavioral expectations set by the teacher, coach, director, advisor or school administrator.
3.2 Any violations of the rules, expectations or conditions may result in suspension from the activity or event and/or other activities. A final decision on the length of the suspension will be made by the principal in consultation with the teacher, coach, director or advisor of the activity.
4. Appeal
Students who feel they have been discriminated against in participation or discipline in school activities or events on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, familial status, disability, status with regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, gender identity, membership or activity in a local human rights commission, genetic information or age may appeal the action through the processes outlined in District Policy 503, Student Rights and Responsibilities, and Administrative Regulation 503.4AR, Harassment, Discrimination, or Violence, or Hazing by a Student.
