Media Curriculum Overview

Welcome!

Our goal in the Library/Media Center is to help children learn how to access, process, and communicate information and to encourage them to be life-long learners and life-long library users. As often as possible, we try to integrate their library lessons with their grade level curriculum to make it more meaningful and relevant, as well as read aloud to them and give book talks. The skills covered are also a part of the Library/Media curriculum developed by the ISD 196 Media Specialists.

Students come to the Library/Media Center once each 4-day cycle for 50 minutes. During that period we have a lesson and time for checkout. Kindergartners may check out one book at a time. First through fifth graders may check out two books at a time. Extra books are allowed for special projects.

Students are encouraged to return and check out books any school day --before, during, or after school as long as they have permission from their classroom teacher. They do NOT have to wait until their library day. We hope that each child has at least one book always available here at school and/or at home.

One of the special programs in the L/MC is Celebration Books. These are books voluntarily given to the Woodland L/MC by students and staff at any time of the year for various reasons, including birthdays, in memory of a special friend or relative, to honor a teacher, or just because. Watch upcoming newsletters for further details.

Third, fourth, and fifth graders are invited to participate in the Maud Hart Lovelace Award (MYRA = Minnesota Young Readers Award).Twelve books have been nominated this year. Each student who reads, or has read to him/her, at least three of the titles will be eligible to vote for a winner.
