Read to Feed |
| The fourth graders recently participated in Heifer International’s Read to Feed program. This is a reading incentive program designed by Heifer International, a nonprofit organization that gets children involved in a real hands-on-way to help solve global problems like hunger and poverty. The students collected pledges for their reading for a one-month period. The goal was to raise money to buy livestock for struggling families who need an ongoing source of income. Southview’s fourth graders raised $1,111 and were able to purchase a cow, pig, water buffalo, llama, chicks, bees and two flocks of geese. The students learned many important lessons from this activity. They learned about different cultures around the world and the importance of using the earth’s resources wisely. They learned the value of self-reliance. Most importantly they learned that they can make a difference in the world. |
