This is a district-wide program that helps students find solutions to problems by having peers act as mediators. The mediation is always done under the direction of an adult and with two peer mediators. This type of mediation is a way for students to cooperatively work out conflicts with the mediators.
Students are selected to be mediators by a process that involves other fourth grade students, teachers, the principal, and the school psychologist. Fourth graders are trained in the spring so they are ready to go in the fall.
The program’s goals are:
•Resolve peer disputes that interfere with the educational process
•Build a stronger sense of cooperation
•Improve school climate
•Increase student participation in school issues
•Develop leadership skills, communication, critical thinking, and practical life skills
