English Language Learners


Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are emphasized in ways which enhance the English language development of those students learning English as a new language. Instruction for ELL students varies, depending on their level of English competence. Many hands-on activities are experienced to get the "real feel" for English!Some students at Southview come from homes where other languages are spoken. Home languages represented in our English Language Learners (ELL) program include the following:
• Spanish • Cambodian • Vietnamese • Chinese • English • Thai	• Amharic • Russian • Nuer • German • Bulgarian • Afghan
New Beginners These newcomers receive intensive basic vocabulary instruction. High Beginners to Low Intermediate: These students, who have a basic oral vocabulary in English, are taught using the "Amazing English" curriculum published by Addison-Wesley Publishing Company and a new program called "English in My Pocket". This series has a great home-school connection component. High Intermediate to Advanced: The curriculum for these students is individually designed to meet the unique needs of each student.
