Students have the opportunity to begin the study of an instrument with Ms. Holt during the summer between grades 4 and 5. A program of seven small group lessons is offered at Southview during June and July. These lessons are designed to get students off to a successful start on their instruments during a time of year that, for many students, offers more flexibility in scheduling and time to explore something new.

During the school year, in addition to weekly small group lessons where instrumental technique is taught, students become members of the "Southview Band" which rehearses after school on Mondays from mid-October through April. (Transportation is provided home after these rehearsals for students who are usually bussed home.)

Concerts are presented three times during the year, typically in December, March, and April. These concerts are always exciting for the students as well as their families, as it is here that students can really show off their hard work and progress.
