Welcome
to the Southview Media Center!
All
students visit the Media Center for regularly
scheduled classes once every six cycle
days. Each library/media class includes
a lesson and time to check out materials.
The Media Center is open all day for checking
out materials, using computers and CD-ROMs,
and doing research. Any book checked out
is due in six cycle days. |
Birthday
Book Club
Students, staff and parents are invited to participate in the Birthday
Book Club program sponsored by the Southview Media Center. Hard-cover
books can be donated to the Library Media Center in honor of a
student's birthday, half birthday, or "just because." Students
may share the book with their class and then bring the book to
the Media Center where a special bookplate is placed inside the
front cover. The bookplate indicates who the book is from and the
reason for the donation. The book is placed on a special Birthday
Book cart for the school year to be checked out by students. The
next year, the book is added to the regular library collection. |
Kindergarten
Curriculum
Kindergartners begin checking out a library book at the end of
September, and may exchange a book during library/media class.
Kindergarten media curriculum includes responsibility and care
of books, parts of a book, and enjoyment of literature. |
First
Grade Curriculum
First graders may check out one book at a time and are encouraged
to return their book any morning before school begins and check
out a new book. Introductory library skills include learning
about non-fiction books, authors, illustrators, Caldecott Medal
books and public libraries. |
| Second
through fifth graders may check out
two books at a time, and are welcome
to return and check out new books
any time, not just on their scheduled
library/media day. |
Second
Grade Curriculum
Second grade media curriculum expands upon the skills taught in
kindergarten and first grade, such as how to access and use specific
non-fiction books. This curriculum includes more information regarding
selecting appropriate fiction books, authors, illustrators, reference
skills and introduction to computerized encyclopedias, the Accelerated
Reader program and accessing library materials through our library
computers. |
Third
Grade Curriculum
Third grade curriculum includes various fiction genres, more reference
skills and integration with the Social Studies curriculum. |
Fourth
Grade Curriculum
Fourth grade media curriculum is designed to build upon the techniques
and skills used for locating, using, organizing and sharing information
sources. Emphasis is placed on media messages, reference, reporting
and the research process. Other fiction genres and the Newbery
Medal books are also explored. |
Fifth
Grade Curriculum
Library/media skills for fifth graders include a review of materials
introduced in earlier lessons and the application of these skills
in doing research and reporting information. Special in-depth lessons
include using computerized reference sources and special reference
books. Different fiction genres and authors are also studied. |
Maud
Hart Lovelace
This annual award is sponsored by Minnesota Youth Reading Awards,
Inc., to honor Maud Hart Lovelace, author of the Betsy-Tacy books.
Minnesota children in grades three through eight can participate
in the Maud Hart Lovelace reading contest to choose the winner.
At Southview, students in fourth and fifth grades participate in
this program. To be able to vote for their favorite book, children
must read or hear three out of the twelve nominated books. This
list of books is updated annually. Voting takes place at the end
of March, and the statewide winner is announced on Maud Hart Lovelace's
birthday, April 25. |
