Fifth
grade is both an ending and a beginning. As members of the
graduating class of Southview Elementary, students have new
responsibilities. Many fifth graders participate in the following:
*
band
* patrols
* student council
* peer mediation
* Enhanced Learning Program
* Odyssey of the Mind
* Stock Market Game
* Math Olympiad
* District Spelling Bee |
All
fifth graders take part in Drug Abuse Resistance Education
(DARE). A trip to Lowrey Nature Center and journaling at
the Minnesota Zoo are annual events. It is an exciting and
challenging year preparing students to meet success in middle
school.

Highlights
of the school year:
Patrols
do many things that help insure the
safety of Southview students. As
a reward for their valuable service,
patrols spend an evening at Skateville,
attend the Shrine Circus, and cheer
at a spring Twins baseball game.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is brought to the
students by the Apple Valley police department. Officer
Karen Shaw comes into our school once a week for seventeen
weeks to teach kids how to say NO to drugs.
Students build Rome in just one day! During our study of
Ancient Rome students investigate a topic of their choice
and complete a research paper on this subject. They also
create a building that is related to their research paper
. This building displays Ancient Roman architectural features.
Toga-clad students present their research and models at
an open house for parents. This is an exciting project
and the results are amazing!
Track and Field Day at Apple Valley High School is always
an exciting event. Students test their track and field
skills against other elementary schools in May. Ribbons
are given to the top ten finishers in each event. Southview
rules!
A winter trip to Lowrey Nature Center proves how hearty
our Minnesota fifth graders are. Naturalists lead students
in activities that relate to our environments science unit.
Some past activities have included deer study, bird watching,
winter pond study, outdoor survival, Norwegian kick sledding,
maple syruping, and Native American games.
