We believe that ALL Fifth grade students should be given the opportunity to become a member of the School Safety Patrol Team at Shannon Park.
We believe that ALL our students can fulfill the duties of a School Safety Patrol, if they truly value the position, the responsibility, and put forth the necessary effort and commitment.
An individual’s membership on the Patrol team is based on their desire to accept the challenges and responsibilities that go along with the duties of a School safety Patrol member. We also understand that the requirements for the position, which includes quality behavior at a consistent level, could make it difficult for some students to remain a patrol member. If these students would like the opportunity to succeed in this program, we believe that they should be given the chance.
We use a Responsibility Notice System as a means of holding all students accountable to the School Patrol program. Although the responsibility system may offer some anxiety for a few students, it is this process that makes it possible to offer the patrol positions to ALL Fifth grade students and still insure quality leadership and role models for the other students here at Shannon Park.
Each student will begin the school year with 25 Responsibility Points. Each responsibility notice a student receives will deduct points from their responsibility point total. If a student has 15 or more points deducted for behavior related incidents, that student will lose the privilege of taking part in any remaining patrol rewards. When a student’s responsibility points total reaches zero, the student will relinquish their duties and be dismissed from the patrol team. The possibility for dismissal from the patrol team has always be a part of being a Patrol member. It is important for your child to realize this aspect of the job as he/she is deciding whether to take part in the program or not. If/when a student receives a responsibility notice, you will be notified immediately and will be given the remaining responsibility point total that your child has. It is our hope that this will encourage him/her to modify that behavior. We are excited about the School Safety Patrol program we have developed for the students here at Shannon Park. We hope you will feel it is a quality program as well. Please read over and discuss with your child the Safety Patrol Contract and the Safety Patrol Handbook. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Ann Kvittem, the School Safety Patrol Supervisor or your child’s homeroom teacher.
