Peer Helpers
The Peer Helper Program at SHMS is
a group of fourteen students who reach out to help other students mediate
school or other peer related conflicts. Peer Helpers encourage and assist
students to think about alternatives to situations and make responsible decisions.
Peer Helpers meet with students during mid-day activity times. Anyone interested
in talking to a Peer Helper may do so by filling out a referral form which
are located outside the counselors' office doors or in the library.
What is Peer Mediation?
Peer Mediation is a process for resolving problems and conflicts by using
trained neutral "third party" mediators. The goal in mediation is to solve
the differences using constructive, pro-active means. Peer Mediation provides
our students an alternative to the traditional disciplinary practices. Everyone
involved, either as mediators or disputants, learn a new way of handling their
conflicts.

Group Counseling
SHMS offers students an opportunity to challenge themselves socially, emotionally,
and personally by offering group counseling sessions, which focus on specific
topics that students may be currently dealing with. The groups offer students
a chance to resolve or cope constructively with their problems and development
concerns with other students who may be going through a similar experience.
Group participation is usually limited to five to eight students and the sessions
run for approximately six-to-eight weeks. The group meeting is scheduled during
a different class period each week to avoid students being out of the same
class more than once or twice.
Parent permission is required to be in groups.
