Wetlands Dataset

National Wetlands Inventory

Back to main page

The GIS data on Academic2 contains two types of wetlands data. Both the wetlands inventory and the flood data bases contain data on the types and nature of wetlands and water in your region. Information on the national inventory is available from many sources. Two that you may wish to use are:

  1. The NWI homepage at the USFWS. Information about the inventory is available at this site. Here you can also download tables of additional information for your region. Be aware that the table data will need to be worked a bit to be used.
  2. We have uploaded a page from the inventory that gives you the codes used in the inventory.
  3. Display the Wetcc83 layer. Use the tool to click on an area that displays a color (be sure that the Wetcc83 theme is selected. A table like the one below will be displayed.
The table shows you all of the fields and data available for this dataset.

So we begin.

Double click on the wetlands theme and work the fields to create a color scheme that works for your region. Two fields that give good information from the data are the minor1_cod, and the subsystem fields. Here the EM classification refers to an emergent wetland that does not persist from season to season. Again, we have provided a page from the inventory to help track down the meaning of these classifications.

We display the map of the theme shown above alongside the map of soil sensitivity.

Note that any area not classified by the wetlands inventory has been set to display nothing (class1 = U). Because of this, pieces of the soils dataset show through in spaces not classified as wetland.

To accomplish this you double click the wetlands theme to enter the legend editor. In the editor double click on the color block you wish to change.

This brings up the color palette. Click on the paintbrush to select colors for the foreground and background.

You wish to remove the background. Hold down on the popup window after the word "Color". Select Background and click the box on the top left that has an X in it.
