Iceland

Spring Trimester
$2300 estimate, $800 September, $800 January, Balance April

Discover the ever-changing landscapes of Iceland. Students experience the hot and cold, bright and dim, black and white, high and low, waterfalls, hot springs, glaciers, fjords, lakes and lava fields to name just a few of the landscapes.

During the study we stay in farmhouses, guesthouses and hostels. We select places to stay based on their committment to sustainable living and local economies. In the past this has placed us in small farmhouse kitchens eating fabulous herbed lamb chili and in a new "hotel" run by a visionary woman trying to re-establish a small community at the foot of a glacier.

We'll get out on the arctic and spend plenty of time in small communities and villages trying to sort out how people can thrive on this wonderful cold dark rock!

Come along for the adventure!

Iceland and its people parallel many of the studies at SES. This field study spends roughly 75% of the time in the natural environment of Iceland and the balance in cities, towns, and villages. Our work in the field involves hiking, some of which involves climbing to glaciers and over lava flows.

In Iceland people drink glacier water that needs no treatment and heat with geothermal water that exists near the surface. These unique opportunities allow the people to live in what would otherwise be an especially harsh environment. We will investigate this relationship and compare it to what students will find on the Scotland field study.

Our route will blend developed and habitated parts of Iceland with rugged remote locations. Small fishing villages with large spralling towns. Our studies will compare the people in these places and look for similarities with the people back home.
