Here's the problem...
|
Bob has had a successful career as a videotape salesman. Unfortunately, the new DVD format is making it tough for him to make a living. In an effort to recreate himself he has come to you to remake him in the image of something else. The new image of Bob will show a side of Bob different than the tape selling "guy".

Your task is to take the starting image and to make it into something else, using the skills and tools found in lessons 1-4 of our text. Your grade for this project will be based on how well and how completely you use the tools presented in the lessons. Creativity is important in your final production, however, creativity is not a part of the grade.
|
| You may wish to use the book to guide you in remembering the tool that are available. You may use tools and filters not yet presented in the book. But, no additional credit will be given for using these tools. |

Copy the background. Click the eyeball on the original background to Univ. it. You now have the original background to restore should you need it. You could accomplish this task by creating a snapshot in the history window as well (lesson four) |
| Next you need to isolate the man from the other items in the window. Remember, you will be graded on the precision of your work. Take your time, the result will be worth it. | |

The tape can be removed with a combination of magic wand and lasso selection tools. You may wish to experiment with some tools not mentioned in the lessons. The select by color range option is found under the SELECT menu. The various erasers can be used if you magnify the image. |

Because of the texture of the screen behind the man it may be difficult to remove the letters and restore the background. It may be easier to remove the man at this point. Lasso tools and the magic wand may help accomplish this. It is easiest to select the man and then invert the selection. Hit the delete key to remove the background |

A final step in preparation to get creative involves moving the hands to their own layer. This will allow you to place items between the hands and the beard. Create a new layer (label it hands?). select one hand. Here we used the magnetic lasso to get most of the hand. The regular lasso with the shift key added the rest. Cut the hand and paste it into the new "hand" layer. Do the same for the other hand. |

Now you are on your own. Be creative but remember that you final work must show all the painting and editing concepts from lesson 4. Here we've moved the hands down where they belong, added a background color, and restored the beard. To restore the beard we've used another tool not in the lesson. It's called the clone tool. Check the online help discussed in the first chapter for a quick tutorial on the tool. |
| At this point you may wish to create a snapshot as discussed on p. 93 of the lessons. | |

We place a gradient in the background matching the white in the gradient with the reflection on the man's head. We used an airbrush to create a bit of a glow as well. Note that to do these things we needed to add layers to the image. We called them "gradient" and "glow" |

Under the FILTERS menu we applied sharpen to up the resolution. In Google we searched for a baseball cap and a hot dog and added them to the image. This required us to clean up the images from Google using selection tools and such. To make the new additional appear more realistic we applied the FILTER>RENDER>LIGHTING EFFECTS to each new item to be sure that they were illuminated by the same light source as the man. |

As a final step we applied some color to the man. To do this we used the example in lesson four and filled a skin-tone overlay layer above the man's layer. We cut the green background out of the layer but did not cut out the hot dog nor the hat (although we could have). we thought both looked better with a bit of brown overlay. |
