Special Education/ Disabilities Services Overview

Special Education Programs provide a continuum of services for students having significant academic, social, emotional, psychological, behavioral and/ or physical difficulties that interfere with their learning experience.

á      Special Education Programming is offered to those students who have qualified for special education services through the District 196 Child Study Process.  This procedure involves referral to the child study team, parent permission for assessment, assessment and evaluation of student needs, team determination of meeting qualifying criteria, and program decision making and planning with staff, parent/guardian and the student.

á      Special Education Services at SES occur mainly within the regular mainstream curriculum and classrooms.  Depending on the identified student need, services may include implementing appropriate accommodations or modification with the mainstream teachers to promote student success, providing academic skills teaching and coaching, coordinating communication between parties involved and providing post-secondary special education guidance.

á      Students who have an active IEP from their home high school should contact their case manager to have their IEP and Special Education File transferred to SES so that services will not be interrupted.  It is important that the SES Disabilities Services Coordinator be notified as soon as possible of the registration and transfer of all students with disabilities.  This notification may be provided by the student, the parent/guardian or the home high school case manager.
