Students that attend Red Pine Elementary in grades 1, 2, and 3 have a fifty minute art class every seven cycle days and students in grades 4 and 5 have one fifty minute art class every six cycle days. The curriculum used is The Discover Art Program "Adventures in Art" by Laura Chapman, Davis Publications. The content of the curriculum is related to the goal of contemporary art education; developing a lifelong interest in learning more about art, and an informed appreciation of art. The "Adventures in Art " program is based on four disciplines in art:
1. Art appreciation (perceptual awareness)
2. Making art (creative expression)
3. Interpreting, analyzing, and judging works of art (art criticism)
4. Understanding art in relation to other cultures (art history).
Art has value in the development of every child, and art activities advance all education. Through meaningful art experiences, children develop self expression, higher level thinking skills, and cultural literacy. Creative art experiences prepare children for imaginative, yet disciplined approaches to the solutions of problems.
The Red Pine Art Specialist, Peg Gust, strives to provide a positive learning environment, rich in expressive opportunities, in which all children may develop their imaginations, creative skills, and increase their understanding of art. Each grade level explores the art disciplines through drawing, painting, sculpture, clay, weaving, and graphic design. As part of their art education, Red Pine students have the opportunity to display their works of art in the annual student art show held in the Spring.
Red Pine students have also designed three public art projects. In 1995 and 1996, Red Pine fifth grade students designed tile projects that currently hang on the walls of our school. Their tiles ranged from depictions of life at school to favorite community activities.
Since our ten year anniversary in 2005, our fifth graders have created tiles that are displayed at the front entry. PTO has sponsored this memorable activity.
