Curricular Course Offerings
All Bands at Rosemount stress the development of technical performance ability, sight reading skills, and attainment of overall musical knowledge through daily Band rehearsals and sectional work. Each Band performs a wide variety of literature from the classics to current literature. The Bands will perform four concerts and may participate in exchange concerts or field trips. Band members in grades 9-12 are encouraged to participate outside of the school day in the various co-curricular groups, such as Pep Band, Jazz Band, Solos and Ensembles Contest, Flute Choir, Clarinet Choir, Brass Choir, Pit Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble.

Welcome to the pride, excitement and fun of RHS Marching Band!
MARCHING BAND is a performance based band that involves several performances in a nine week "performance season" during the first two months of school (September and October).
The Marching Band is committed to excellence in music education, personal development, and musical & visual performance.
As a member of the Marching Band, you are expected to:
· Attend and participate in all weekly July/August practices and Band Camp, (Band Camp is at St. John's University; and costs $350)
· Attend and participate in all performances in August, September, and October
· Memorize ten minutes of music, equipment work, and marching drill & successfully pass a music memorization test.
· Register with the Minnesota State High School League and abide by its regulations for participation in co-curricular activities.

Ninth grade students must audition in January prior to registering for this class.
Chamber Band
Grade 10-12
Trimester 1 only
Prerequisite: Instructor Approval
This course offering is intended for students in grade 10 - 12 not interested in Marching Band, and who wish an in-depth instrumental music
experience. Students should be capable of performing medium to advanced
level literature. The ensemble will study and
perform literature representing many stylistic and historical periods. Performances will include one concert.
Concert Bands Blue & Gold
Grade 9-12
A wide variety of music literature will be studied and performed in a major concert each trimester. The fundamentals of basic musicianship will be emphasized in each class. All band members are expected to be involved in some form of lesson experience to develop personal music understanding, appreciation, playing techniques and musicianship (lessons are provided by the instructors). Clarinet - 4 Mitchell Lurie Premium reeds (3, 3 1/2 or 4 strength), Vandoren 5RV Lyre Mouthpiece, Reedguard (plastic reedholder), swab, music lyre.
Alto Saxophone - 4 Hemke or Vandoren reeds (3 strength), Yamaha or Selmer C Star mouthpiece, Reedguard (plastic reedholder), swab, music lyre.
Tenor Saxophone - 4 Hemke or Vandoren reeds (2 1/2 or 3 strength), Yamaha or Selmer C Star mouthpiece, Reedguard (plastic reedholder), swab, music lyre

Music Theory
Open to grades 9-12
Prerequisite: Interest in music
Music Theory is a one trimester class designed for students who want to develop and increase skills in reading, writing, listening and analyzing music. This class will introduce students to the elements of music: melody, harmony, rhythm, form expression and the texture of sounds. Students will become familiar with the various elements of music through analysis, listening and discussions. Students will gain an understanding and appreciation for the elements of Western music styles, and will experience the creative process through composition projects. An introduction to computer based composition and arranging will also be a component in the course. No previous music experience is necessary, but is helpful. Public performance is not a requirement of the class. Students will be evaluated on the basis of class participation/daily work , selected projects, quizzes and a notebook. A final examination will be given at the end of the term.
Band - 2nd & 3rd Trimester
Concert Bands Blue & Gold

Varsity Band
Grade 10 only
A wide variety of music literature will be studied and performed in a major concert each trimester. The fundamentals of basic musicianship will be emphasized in each class and expanded upon to advanced levels of musicianship. All band members are expected to be involved in some form of lesson experience to develop personal music understanding, appreciation, playing techniques and musicianship (lessons are provided by the instructors). Symphonic Band
Grade 11 & 12 only
Prerequisite: Audition with instructor
A wide variety of music literature will be studied and performed in a major concert each trimester. Class emphasis will be on furthering the development of instrumental and ensemble playing skills through medium - advanced level band literature. All band members are expected to be involved in some form of lesson experience to develop personal music understanding, appreciation, playing techniques and musicianship (lessons are provided by the instructors). Wind Ensemble
Prerequisite: Audition with instructors, (March audition)
The Wind Ensemble is an instrumental music ensemble devoted to studying and performing a variety of band literature, including, but not limited to: orchestral transcriptions, basic band repertoire, multi movement works and contemporary compositions. Membership is based on a rigorous and comprehensive audition held each Spring.
The RHS Wind Ensemble members have the responsibility of coming to rehearsals with their individual part prepared to the best of their abilities, rehearsal time is then spent on exploring music form, expression and ensemble performance.

As the "top" ensemble at RHS, the Wind Ensemble will represent RHS at a variety of contest and festival activities.
