Discipline at Rosemount Elementary

District 196 has a district-wide discipline, which addresses behavior expectations and consequences for misbehavior.

A goal of Rosemount Elementary School is to provide a warm, positive climate for learning by helping students develop a sense of self-responsibility and respect for others.

Rosemount teachers will help students recognize, acquire and maintain the behaviors necessary to a positive learning environment by:

1. Modeling a caring, respectful attitude towards others.
2. Setting clear expectations and rules.
3. Teaching the social and behavioral expectations that will make the school a safe, warm place to learn.
4. Creating a system of reinforcements and consequences that support the rules and expectations.
5. Enforcing the School District’s “Student Rights and Responsibilities.”

To meet these commitments, Rosemount intends to focus on the following student expectations which are believed to be appropriate for all children. They will be posted in all instructional areas.

• Strive for Excellence
Striving for Excellence means that a student is always attempting to do their best. This means that they are trying in academic as well as nonacademic areas to always work up to their potential. Students that meet this expectation are those who get their homework done and turned in on time. They are also students who follow directions and work diligently on anything that they are given.

• Be respectful to yourself and others
Being respectful to yourself and others is when you act appropriately to students and staff members. This means that when a student is asked to do something they do it in a timely manner without being reminded. They also do not argue with staff members about particular issues within the school. They treat other students with consideration.

• Care for property
Students take care of all parts of the school. They pick up after themselves in the classroom and public areas of the building. They put away materials when they have been taken out. Students also are respectful of property such as computers and desks and use them in a manner that is appropriate.

• Work and play safely
Students follow the rules of the playground, classroom, and hallways. This includes using the apparatus on the playground in an appropriate way, playing games by the rules, and lining up after the bell has rung.

Although these student expectations are written in a broad, general manner, they will be made more specific by their child’s teacher through instruction that will occur throughout the school year. The teacher’s purpose in providing instruction will not only be to produce a given behavior, but to help the child see himself/herself as the kind of person who is responsible and caring.
