PARKVIEW PTO MEETING
MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 22, 2009 @ 4:00 p.m.
Attendance:
Staff: Pamela Haldeman, Kari Sohlberg, Helen Jacobse, Amy Wallenta, Karen Williams, Renee Ward, Stephanie Swanson, Susan Ostbloom, Becky Bowman
Parents: Chris Myrah, Jen Hazelton, Michelle Korger, Shannon Bauer, Jessica Biskupski, Angie Talbot, Michael Crider, Shelly Larson, Dawn Morrison, Nici Dunn, Tara Roeckers, Chisom Nwaneri
Treasurer’s Report:
1. Treasurer Nici Dunn went over the proposed budget for 2009-2010. Preliminary approval of the budget was received. We will need another vote on the budget at the next PTO meeting in order to obtain final approval.
2. We have cut down some of the PTO expenses this year due to our decrease in forecasted fundraiser projections. Instead of the PTO paying for monthly teacher appreciation treats and PTO meeting daycare, we are asking for volunteers in these areas.
Principal’s Report:
1. There are currently 764 students enrolled at Parkview.
2. Pam Haldeman confirmed that as of today there have been no reported H1N1 cases at Parkview. She also stressed the fact that the classroom teachers are stressing ways to be sanitary by washing hands several times a day and sneezing/coughing into elbow. The sharing of school supplies was also discussed and there is no way around some of this.
3. The two Fall after-school programs will be run differently this year. One program will be put on by Community Education and there will be a fee for these classes. They will be offered on a lottery basis as the class sizes will be limited. The second program will offer free after-school classes put on by Parkview for children who qualify for summer school.
President’s Report:
1. Discussion was held on why we have several fundraisers throughout the year and where the PTO money goes, specifically the main cost of the additional teacher to keep class sizes down. The budget shows where we spend the PTO funds.
2. Innisbrook fundraiser is in progress. Down about $12,000 in sales right now. We think this is due to the current economy.
3. We are doing the cookie dough fundraiser separately this year so that we don’t have cookie dough getting warm in the gym prior to being picked up. The funds from this sale are included in the budget total for the Innisbrook fundraiser ($15,000).
4. Innisbrook was chosen as our fundraising company because we get a 50% return on sales and 98% of the products are made in America.
5. Nici Dunn explained the other fundraising events we have throughout the year such as Culver’s Day, Bookfairs, Chuck E. Cheese, and the Read-A-Thon.
6. Mention was made to have each Parkview family donate $25 instead of doing the Innisbrook fundraiser. A specific fundraising meeting will be scheduled in the near future to discuss this and other fundraising options.
7. A suggestion was made to put the daily Parkview events such as fundraiser deadlines and Culver’s night, etc. on each classroom’s monthly take-home calendar so that all dates are in one place and parents will not have to refer to more than one calendar.
8. New kindergarten parents mentioned that the kindergarten orientation was too large and that maybe it should be separated into two groups. Pam Haldeman will handle this issue.
9. It was decided that we need to get more information out to the new kindergarten families prior to the Kindergarten Orientation regarding the Tool Box kits, the box top contest at the beginning of the school year, fundraising events that will be coming up during the school year. We will try to hand out written information to the new kindergarten families at registration in the spring.
10. Dawn spoke about the upcoming Spirit Wear wherein we will keep it simple by using the new school colors of blue, green, black and white. These items should be available for purchase at conferences in October.
11. Thank you card was presented by Pam Haldeman to the PTO Board from the Parkview Staff thanking the board for all their help with the workshop day breakfast, teacher appreciation treats, and the long awaited Parkview sign.
12. Superintendent Jane Berenz is scheduled to speak at the October PTO meeting.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m. Next PTO meeting is scheduled for October 20, 2009, at 6:30 p.m.
