Guest Speaker: Carolyn Olijnek
Topic: Math problem solving. “Helping your child at home”
Carolyn Olijnek is a Parkview parent, as well as a second grade teacher at Southview.
We discovered what a polygon was. We had an opportunity to draw polygons on a whiteboard. We discussed what made up a polygon as well as the definition.
Math problem solving at home was the next topic Carolyn covered. Her methodology included using place value by making tens and ones, count by twos, fives, tens, and hundreds and avoids teaching the algorithm method to soon. There are many ways you may help your child at home. You may start by counting change (money), Measure things (cook), listen more and talk less and allow your children to invent strategies for solving problems.
