Guest Speaker: Jon Currie, Superintendent
Thank you to Jon Currie, for taking the time from his busy schedule; to come to Parkview and talk with the parents and staff regarding the levy Referendum.
The school board of Independent School District 196 has set a levy referendum election on November 8th 2005. The purpose of the levy referendum is to renew and provide additional operating funds for the school district. If approved, the funds would sustain the current level and quality of education offered in the district for at least the next five years, while maintaining a fund balance of at least five percent.
If the levy referendum is not approved, the district will need to continue a course of annual budget reduction that would be made on top of the 11.5 million that was already cut last year and this year combined. The additional cuts could total as much as $5million in 2006-07 and at least that much each year after that. This is what district 196 is asking for, to renew a 10-year, $105.82 per pupil levy that was originally approved in 1995 and expires this year, to increase the district’s levy authority by an additional $430 per pupil for 10 years, and to extend the length of a six-year, $506.57 per pupil levy approved in 2001 for an additional eight years through 2015.
If the levy is approved, the combined tax impact on the average value home in district 196 ($238.500) would be an increase of $18.32 per month over the current year’s district taxes.
District 196 is a high-achieving district, with students scoring above average on state and nation tests, district 196 has a 96% graduation rate, ACT scores are 1.1 above state average; which is the highest in the nation and our graduates thrive at colleges and universities across the nation.
District 196 continues to spend less money per pupil that the average school district statewide ($537 less per pupil) On Tuesday, November 8, voters in District 196 will have an opportunity to decide what kind of education they want for their children and their community by voting in a levy referendum election.
Next Meeting: November 15th, 2005 at 6:30 Holiday Craft ~Parents and their children will have an opportunity to make a craft together. Meeting adjourned: special speaker spoke until approximately 7:45 pm
