Secretary's Report: Motion to accept November 2008 PTO Meeting minutes.
Motion to Approve. Seconded, Motion Carried.
Welcome to the Girl Scouts from Troop 50403. The four girls attend Eagan, Apple Valley and Rosemount High Schools. They presented their *Child Safety Project* in order to earn their Gold Award, which is the final and highest achievement in Girl Scouts. Sherri Sablak joined them as their leader. Information packets will be available for parents upon request.
Treasurer's Report:
- The budget report for the 2008/09 school year was handed out. A grand total of $37,100 is needed to keep all programs going. Our numbers on fundraisers are down.
- In order to get numbers for Culver's Night back up, Judy Berg, First Grade Teacher at Parkview, was asked to make some of her popular cakes for the raffle. Staff and Parents are encouraged to participate. Please let students know of dates and times to get our numbers back up.
- Due to a problem with insufficient checks made out to PTO we will have to change our policy. PTO is charged a fee for each insufficient check turned in. In the future only cash will be accepted for fieldtrips, checks won't be accepted. This is to avoid the penalty-fees that have to be paid. Scholarships for fieldtrips are set up to help those in need.
Principal's Report:
- Parkview has applied for a MEA foundation grant of $5,000 for our Artist in Residence program. This would pay for our grade level artists in residence. Right now this program is funded through PTO. We usually have a different artist for every grade level.
THANK YOU to Laurie Olhoff, a past Parkview parent, for helping with the application for this grant.
- Another grant we applied for is through the City of Lakeville for the *Safe Routes to School Planning Study*. This is sponsored through the City of Lakeville, Fire and Police Department. They have assessed our building, so more children can walk and bike to school safely. We requested connecting paths to the sidewalks and 2 additional sidewalks at the 5th grade and KG exits.
Lisa Cullen:
Lisa Cullen has some good news to share. Her Fifth Grade Class entered the Arrow Book Club *First Day of School* contest. The Grand Prize was won by Fifth Grade student Bryan J. The author Gordon Korman himself picked Bryan as the Grand Prize winner. Congratulations Bryan!
The Grand Prize is a visit from Gordon Korman to Mrs. Cullen's class. Mr. Korman has agreed to talk to all fifth graders, and will then spend some time with Mrs. Cullen's class and Bryan. The visit will last about two hours and will take place sometime in early May.
Fundraiser Report:
- The fundraising committee has been looking at alternative companies to provide products for Parkview. In recent weeks we have received materials and/or presentations and tours from Kathryn Beich (current provider), Geckler in Lakeville and Innisbrook. The committee has recommended that we switch to Innisbrook for the upcoming 2009/10 school year.
Our main reasons for switching to Innisbrook are: professional consultants; 90% of their products are made in the USA, so parents are able to support our school by buying quality; they own the paper company that makes the wrapping paper, it is all environmentally friendly and they frequently change their designs; they own the chocolate company; and distribution on delivery day is made easy by numbered boxes and pallets. Volunteers will no longer have to sort the boxes alphabetically which has taken a lot of time in the past. We still need a few volunteers to come aboard to help us with this fundraiser. Please contact Dawn Morrison or Nici Dunn. There will be a summer training and product kickoff. Voting slips were passed out for parents to voice their choice of having one big fundraiser offering products and cookie dough at the same time or having two separate fundraisers of products being offered in fall, and cookie dough separate later in spring. Innisbrook's recommendation is to spread out the fundraiser, doing both products and cookie dough together doesn't increase our profit. Innisbrook has an 800-# for customer service. They also offer an easy online ordering system. Our profits are 50% for products and giftwrap, and 40% for food items. The theme for next year is Safari, which goes along nicely with our Parkview Panda.
- We will continue to offer the School Tool Box for the upcoming school-year 2009-2010 through the same company as last year. Contact persons will be Dawn Morrison and Nici Dunn. The school supplies are grade level specific. Costs are rounded up to an even dollar amount. We won't be offering backpacks this year, as they are too big for our lockers at Parkview. Order forms will be handed out in May 2009. The Tool Boxes will be ready for pick-up at the Fall Open House, where parents can pick up their children's school supplies and take them to their classrooms. There is a change in their incentive program, they are no longer offering the $5 Target card for ordering a Tool Box. The new incentive program has random coupons placed in the Tool Boxes, with several prizes, that can be won.
President's Report:
- Our Spring Event, the Spring Fling, is scheduled for May 15th. Approximate times are 5:30 to 8 pm. Notes were sent home with the students and we received lots of responses. We have reserved a DJ with Kidz Dance for the Spring Fling. The DJ was hired last year for the 5th grade party and was a success and big hit with the 5th graders. The dance can be held indoors or outdoors.
We will have a Silent Auction with baskets to be filled. In the past we have given each grade level specific topics, this year we will let everyone pick which theme to want to contribute to.
Other ideas are the grand stand, different booths with art activities. High School students participating in the Honor Art Society could volunteer with face painting etc.
Food, i.e. spaghetti or penne pasta could be donated from a local restaurant. Other ideas were to offer popcorn and cotton candy and have families bring their own picnic foods.
A small entry fee for the dance and popcorn will be collected. Prices will be made available before the Spring Event, so parents will know what to expect .
- Opinions are wanted for Dad's Day. Parents and Teachers are asked to make suggestions on how to improve this day. Some suggestions were to split up the days by alphabetical order. Parents with last names A-F would come on Monday, G-L on Tuesday and so on. It could be Dad's Volunteer Week instead of Day, so Dads can pick the most convenient day to come to school. We could offer a breakfast for Dads and their child, especially for the 3rd and 4th graders. Another idea was to have Dad's Day by grade level, with a different grade each month. It was suggested not to hold Dad's Day on Spring Fling or Carnival day again, as this results in too much traffic throughout the school and overfilled parking lots. We should also promote that Dads are welcome to come volunteer any day during the school year, this could be promoted in the Panda Press. It was suggested to make Father's Day presents on Dad's Day.
- Ideas are needed on how to promote the Box Top programs. It was noted that the Box Top program is not enough advertised, parents would like to know how much money our school makes on this program. This could be advertised in the Panda Press. There are many ideas and information available on the Box Top website. Lauren West and Stacy Stucker have agreed to work together with PTO and student council to kickoff a contest to collect the Boxtops in the month of February. Our deadline to send in for a check this school year is Feb 28th. The tops already collected are being counted and added to this.
- Twins Night is scheduled for April 19, 1:10 pm. Prices weren't raised, and the tickets are still $12 a seat. Hot Dogs are offered for a discounted price of $3.75. This has always been a popular and fun event for Parkview. Come out and enjoy the game while you socialize with your friends from Parkview.
