Carnival Meeting Minutes January 29,
2006
Attendance: Brett Stucker, Kelli Linnerooth, Kay Larson
Handout of binders for the committees for those in attendance.
This year’s carnival will be very similar to the one held two years ago. We reviewed the “hindsight” of the ’04 carnival and discussed what worked and what didn’t.
What worked: It was unanimous that we needed to hold the carnival outside again. The speedway, inflatable jumpers, fair hair, grandstand and a select number of games will be repeated due to their popularity.
Speedway: Brett will be contacting his resource for trykes again and Cindy Purfeerst will be responsible for borrowing the large trykes. We will approach the police department again to borrow their bicycle obstacle training course items.
Inflatables: Stacy Stucker will research inflatable prices and possibilities for new things to rent in addition to the slide, moonwalk and bungee run. Things to explore are the boxing and jousting rings and the inflatable walls.
Fair Hair: Amy Kilmartin signed up to head this area. We will explore having two separate stations for fair hair. Maybe the people taking tickets or doing the hair can wear big colorful wigs to highlight this station.
Grandstand: We will approach Mr. Sullivan and Mr. O’Keefe to see if they would be willing to emcee this year. We want to have a replay of the hula hoop contest, pie eating contest, karaoke, and door prize recognition. We may see if we can get some high school kids to perform as well. It was agreed that we did not have the funds to pay for a magician or clown since this section was a “free” event. We will once again have the wondering “characters” such as Sparky, Mc Gruff, Chuck E Cheeses, etc. roaming the grounds. Kay will talk to Mrs. Krueger about the 5th grade band playing the national anthem for the beginning of the carnival and perhaps a few other songs. She will also talk to the Cub Scouts about participating in the carnival and helping with the flag raising. Kelli will contact the Girl Scouts, 4-H, CAC, Community Education, and RAAA regarding participating in the carnival with a booth. It was decided that they could either pay $25.00 for their booth reservation or charge one ticket for any activities they may have for the kids. Fishing for funds raised about 2000.00 last year. We agreed that it was a good use of resources to have this again. Kelli will be attending a student council meeting to discuss spirit week events and hype for fishing for funds. Kay will talk to Dallen regarding donation needs that the National Guard may have to serve as a community service. We will explore giving free tickets to those who bring in donations. Ticket costs will remain largely the same. The goal will be to keep the event affordable and fun while still raising funds for the school.
Food: we will have two locations for food. We will have cotton candy, candy bars, popcorn and pop/water again. Kay will research the cost for cotton candy and candy bars. We will begin popping popcorn earlier in the day so that we don’t run out again.
Things that we will be changing: Many people wanted the carnival to go longer and to start earlier. We will attempt having the carnival times run from 4:30-8:30pm. The greatest concern with extending the hours will be the need for more volunteers/shifts. We will not have hotdogs and chips this year but will have pizza due to the large success of that during the Spring Fling last year. Stacy Stucker will talk to area merchants regarding being our pizza vendor. We are going to explore getting a car or large item donated for a live auction for the night of the carnival. We needed more volunteers to help with the actual set up of the event (15-20 throughout the day. We are going to talk about having a dad’s day scheduled for the day of the carnival. The dad’s can work half of their shift in the classroom and 1/2 doing carnival set-up. The photo booth was not successful last year. Kay spoke with Dawn Alberts about doing this differently this year. There were comments about the long lines at the prize tent. We will add rope stanchions to help with crowd control and will post the prizes on large boards up high were the kids can start looking at how to spend their tickets before getting to the table. The grandstand was not in an ideal location (due to power sources). We will review moving the grandstand to a more central location if we can use generators to run the speaker system. Food lines need to have rope stanchions to keep orderly. We will be adding a sports obstacle course that will include a hockey shoot, basketball shoot, and football throw. We will contact more of the local papers to pre advertise the event (Farmington, Lakeville, Apple Valley and Rosemount)
We still need several people to help with organizing and pre planning. Kay will continue to call for help.
We reviewed a list of things to do prior to the next meeting.

Spring Carnival and the Spring Book Fair are the next two big fundraisers coming up for Parkview. We still have wrist bands and coupons cards available for purchase.
Volunteer Coordinator Report: We need to start planning ahead for volunteers for the Spring Carnival and Dad’s Day.
Advisory Council Update: Beginning at the end of January Parkview will be having a Read-A-Thon. Students will set reading goals for a two-week period and will also have the opportunity to earn free books at the Usborne Book Fair in February. On January 30th Parkview will be hosting a family reading night. Our special celebrity reader will be Twins mascot, TC Bear. Great books program has begun. Great books is a program with selected students in grades 1, 2, and 3 who meet with an adult group leader once a week during recess and discuss a selected piece of literature. Parkview is proud to say that we have 13 4th and 5th graders in the inventors fair this year. Starting in 3rd quarter the 5th graders will be piloting a new program. This program will help prepare students for high school and college. Our 5th grade students will learn note taking skills, organization, test taking skills, collaborative speaking. Our after school program had 180 students that attended last session. The next session, in February, will be able to have 250 students attend. Additional programs are being offered and bussing is available. A huge thank you goes out to Dawn Toth, a Parkview parent, for presenting Parkview with a grant from Target in the amount of $2,500. The money will help fund the Artist in Residence program and will also help in funding fieldtrips.
President’s Report: Open Gym night is scheduled for January 24th, 6:30-8:00pm If you have ordered your Coupon Cards, they will be here before the end of the month.
