TOPIC: Shannon Gilmore, District 196 Math Trainer
Shannon provided parents with some tools to help support their children in the area of math. The tools covered all grade levels, k-5. Here are some ways to support your mathematician at home.
*Allow children to invent strategies for solving problems This encourages number sense and success in mathematic
*Ask more questions. Give fewer answers. What are you trying to figure out? What do you know now? Let’s reread the problem. Have you answered the question?
*Encourage computation with understanding. Teaching a procedure before a child has had a sufficient amount of time to develop an understanding of the concept forces the child to focus on the rules for the procedure rather than thinking about the mathematics.
*Include your child in the mathematics of everyday life. Determine correct change at the drive-thru. When cooking, double or half a recipe. Play card games and board games
