PTO Meeting Minutes
February 15, 6:30pm
Attendance:
Staff: Sharon Benson, Kristy Cross, Helen Jacobse, Rose Bentson, Michelle Meyer, Pam Haldeman
Parents: Kay Larson, Dallen Schnickles, Carolyn Neubauer, Jason Dugan, Jody Polson, Guy Normandeau, Dawn Toth, Kris Sieve, Ed Sieve
Special Speaker: Pamela Haldeman presents the Site Plan for the upcoming year and reviews goals from last year. This years' goal represents approximately a 2% increase in results over last year goals. Site Plan goal information is available from the school upon request.
Secretary's Report: Minutes from January. Motion to Approve, seconded, motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: We are currently up to date on paying outstanding bills. Based on current projections we should end up with a $4000.00 cushion going into next year. This is down from earlier projections based on our fundraiser earnings being lower than goal. Motion to approve. Seconded. Approved.
Volunteer Coordinator Report: We are looking at filling the remaining PLC positions for a few classes. This is a 2 hour commitment every two weeks from 8-10. It requires someone to sit with a class while the teacher is at instructional training. Training for this person is provided and those who have volunteered have found it to be easy and fun and not near as scary as it sounded in the job description.
The 5th grade party and the 5th grade graduation party is being planned and we are in search of volunteers. We also are looking for volunteers to assist with the planning of the Spring Fling.
We are looking for ways to broaden the base of volunteers as we are finding that the majority of the volunteers are the same people. Please contact Dallen Schnichels, or Kris Sieve if you have ideas on how to increase the number of willing volunteers.
Advisory Council Update: The current goal is to find a way to have more parents informed about Math and Literacy Connection information and to improve the level of involvement. One possible solution being explored is to have "breakout groups" held during Parent Night at the beginning of the school year. One of the breakouts would include a presentation of the Literacy Connection video while the second one would have specific information regarding how parents can best support their child in learning "new" math.
Principal's Report: Kindergarten registration is currently in process. We are projected to have 144 student enrolled in kindergarten this fall versus this years enrollment of 116 (this years projection was originally 112).
Building Renovation Updates: The tentative schedule is for construction to begin in November and to carry throughout all of next year. There is a lot of planning needed to deal with the movement of classrooms and the displacement of the media center during that time. The Advisory Council will be working closely with the school to assist in this process. At this point bringing in satellite units is not an option
President's Report: A fundraiser committee is being put in place to reevaluate next years' programs and to determine a plan for the fall. Look for information in Friday folders regarding a meeting. It was suggested that a questionnaire be sent to parents inquiring if they would prefer to "buy out" of the fundraiser versus physically going door to door or having to coordinate all of the 15 fundraisers we do each year to maintain our budget. It is estimated that $65.00 per child would cover all of the expenses typically raised by the PTO. We are currently planning to have a school supply sale prior to school. We will be using a different company that will provide the supplies in tool kits versus having to purchase the items individually.
We are in the search for educational topic and speaker ideas. Please communicate suggestions to Pam Haldeman or Dallen Schnichels. Ideas mentioned at the meeting were to have Superintendent John Currie come again as well as a follow up on Restitution.
Open Gym Night is scheduled for Thursday, February 17, 2005.
Update on the t -shirt sales. Several staff members have purchased shirts since the last meeting but we still have an excess of larger sizes. It was mentioned that the adult small sizes would fit some children.
Spring Fling Update: We are desperately in need of assistance in coordinating and planning the event scheduled on April 29th. Chair positions for donations and volunteer coordination are needed. The 3-5th grade classes have begun writing their letters to manufacturers, companies and businesses requesting donations for our live auction. We will be sending out letters to all students by the first Friday in March requesting donations for the silent auction baskets. It was requested by students in the 3-5th grade classes that they participate in this portion of the spring event. We have also made a change regarding the food portion of the evening due to concerns expressed about the pot luck. We are now looking into having the food catered and charging a per plate fee to cover that expense. The next meeting is scheduled for March 1st at 5:00pm in the library.
Next Meeting: March 15th at 6:30pm in the Parkview Library.
Meeting Adjourned: Seconded. Meeting adjourned at 7:32pm.
