Reading Programs
Listed below are explanations of the reading programs that will take place in second grade this year. Each program has a specific goal to encourage children to read. This listing is to help provide a clear understanding of how each program is run, its purpose, and how they can interrelate. Information about each program has been sent home.

Year-Long Reading Programs

KIDS READ
Second Grade Program
Description: Students are assigned a day of the week in which they read to a small group of students. Students are to be prepared by practicing the book ahead of time.
Goal: To provide children with opportunities to read to and listen to their peers.
Programs with Timelines
October 1 - February 28

BOOK-IT
School-wide Program
Description: Students keep track of minutes read on a calendar.** Students may earn Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizzas for meeting the goal set by second grade. A student may earn up to one pan pizza each month.
Goal: To encourage reading at home and earning pizza!
October 1 - June 1

READING ACROSS AMERICA
School-wide program 97-98
Description: A school-wide program where the goal is to "read across America." Students keep track of the number of minutes read each month on a calendar.** The minutes are then added at the end of each month, divided by 60 to determine the number of miles traveled or earned. The miles are turned in and added to the scool's map.
Goal: To meet Parkview's goal to increase literacy.
**To simplify keeping track of minutes, one calendar will be provided
for both of these programs.

HOW DO THEY ALL FIT TOGETHER?
In second grade, any reading done for one of the programs can overlap with the others.....
Example: If a student reads two books for a total of 30 minutes, s/he may:
read that book for Kids Read
write a book report for it and turn it in for Take Time to Read
count the minutes for both Book-It and minute/miles for Reading Across America
