Gifted & Talented
The Gifted Talented Program (GT) is an umbrella term for instruction that is in addition to district curriculum requirements. It is delivered by a variety of people including classroom teachers, specialists, volunteers, guests, mentors, and the GT specialist, among others. Each elementary school has a .5 GT specialist. Northview’s GT specialist is Becky Hanson. She has been working at Northview for fourteen years. She has a Masters in Gifted Education. The GT specialists role is to support staff and students needs beyond the regular curriculum.
At each elementary school there are four levels of service numbered one through four. Level one service is enrichment for ALL students. Some examples of this at Northview include field trips, the DISCOVER program, Power Math Packets, Accelerated Reader, special programs, and a strong curriculum core. Level two service is programming for MANY students. Some examples of this at Northview includes Math Clubs, Family Math Night, Differentiated curriculum, and Literature Circles and clubs. The third level of service is for SOME students. This includes cluster classrooms where students of like ability are grouped together for instructional purposes, Minnesota Math Masters (5th grade), the Inventor’s Fair (4th-5th grades), Destination Imagination (3rd, 4th and 5th grades), GT Pull-out program (2nd-5th grades), Algebra clubs (5th Grade), Student Council, Band (5th grade), School Store, (5th grade), Writing for the All Star Times, Morning News (5th Grade), and Math Tubs (Kindergarten-5th grades). The final level of service, Level four is for a FEW students. This level includes subject and grade advancement, early entrance, the All Star Times editors.
Our goal at Northview is to offer many students opportunities to reach their potential. Students are invited to participate in many activities and programs. Students are identified for the GT pull-out program through a set of disrict criteria which includes tests scores and teacher recommendations.
Teachers receive training in differentiation and meet monthly to discuss meeting the needs of capable students. Please e-mail Becky Hanson if you have questions about the GT program.
