Volunteer Program
Parent volunteers are an essential part of making the school year successful and fun for our student. We encourage all parents to participate in the education of our students by sharing their time and talents in the classroom, helping staff “behind the scenes,” and becoming involved in various fundraising and social activities. Even the smallest contribution makes a difference in the overall quality of education for our students. Many of the volunteer opportunities are flexible to meet the needs of your busy schedule. Highland Elementary School counts on and appreciates help from our volunteers. Please take a moment to read about the volunteer opportunities that are available to you throughout the school year!
Art Adventure: This program, provided through the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA), provides an opportunity to bring pieces from the museum to Highland classrooms. In November and March, volunteers present eight works of art that revolve around themes of particular interest to children. Not a teacher or art historian? No need to worry! The MIA provides training, and Highland volunteers cooperatively plan these presentations. Presentation time commitment is generally to more than (2) 2 ½ hour time periods during the months of November and/or March.
Campbell’s/General Mills/Tyson/Kemps/Milk Moo-La: Volunteers are asked to collect label buckets from classrooms, then cut, count, and sort them. Help is also needed with reward parties.
Yearbook: Volunteers are asked to take photos at various events throughout the school year (film and developing expenses will be reimbursed). In addition, volunteers are needed to assist with sales and distribution.
Fall Fund Raiser: Help is needed with processing orders and distributing fund raiser products to the appropriate classrooms.

Teacher Luncheons: Highland Volunteers provide Teacher Luncheons for staff during our Fall and Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences. Volunteers are asked to help with set-up, serving, and/or clean-up.
Special Friend Day: This HUGE event is held the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Several volunteers are needed to assist with greeting guests, serving coffee, and parking lot duty!
Highland Family Picnic: Highland’s Family Picnic is held annually in May. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, serving, games, and clean-up.
5th Grade DARE Graduation: Volunteers are needed to assist with set-up, serving refreshments, and clean-up.
Student Picnic: Highland’s Student Picnic is held on the last day of school. Volunteers are needed to assist with set-up, supervising games, face painting, and clean-up.
ELL Helper: An ELL (English Language Learner) helper/volunteer would assist the ELL teacher in the classroom with class activities or other work assigned by the classroom teacher. The ELL helper/volunteer may also read books with the student during this time.
When you come to volunteer at Highland, we would like you to sign in at the office and wear a volunteer or visitor badge, for the safety of our students.
