Students in grades K, 1 & 2 attend four 25 minute classes over the course of 5 cycle days. Students in grade 4 attend two 50 minute classes every 5 cycle days. Students in grades 3 & 5 attend one 50 minute class every 4 days.

All classes are instructed by our specialists, Mr. Ackland and/or Mr. Wentzel.

Every student has the opportunity to develop skills at his or her own pace as well as understand the "hows" and "whys" for each. All lessons are success oriented in a safe, active environment for all levels of fitness and skill.

Physical Education is a place where learning the values of teamwork, cooperation, and respect for rules and the diversity of others is promoted. Our goal at Highland is to promote active, healthy lifestyles and build positive self-esteem.

Physical Education Attire
• Gym shoes must be worn for all physical activities. Please be certain the shoes have non-marking soles with heels and enclosed toes. No roller-shoes allowed.
• Dress in comfortable clothing. Anticipate the weather when class is outside.
• Girls wearing dresses or skirts are encouraged to have sweats or shorts to wear for class.

Medical Excuses
• Parental excuses must be approved by the nurse before each class.
• Excuses for longer than one week should have a doctor's note.
• If a child's activity should be restricted or limited in any way, please inform the nurse and physical education specialist.

Fitness Testing
All Highland students in grades 1-5 participate in a district wide fitness check every fall and spring. Students are checked in the areas of:
• Abdominal strength (curl-ups)(Grades 3-5)
• Upper body strength and endurance (static arm hang)
• Flexibility of the lower back and hamstring (sit and reach)
• PACER (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) for Grades 3, 4, and 5
