The ELL (English Language Learner) program at Greenleaf Elementary consists of approximately 75 students. Three ELL teachers, Brooke Barnard, Suzanne Jost, and Pam Strawn service these students.
Mrs. Barnard teaches the ELL Kindergartners and first graders. Some of these students are in a program called ELE, English Language Enrichment. They go to their mainstream Kindergarten or First Grade class all morning, and then for an hour to two hours they get level specific ELL instruction in an ELL classroom. Mrs. Jost provides instruction in English for third, fourth, and fifth graders. Pam Strawn spends most of her day at Greenleaf working with second and fifth grades, and she spends part of her afternoon at Shannon Park Elementary.
ELL students are pulled out of their mainstream classes for thirty minutes to an hour each day to work on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The first languages of the English Language Learners at Greenleaf are Spanish, Somali, Chinese, Vietnamese, Lao, Amharic, Burmese, and others. Most of these students come to Greenleaf with some skills in English; however, they must work extremely hard to keep up with their English-speaking classmates. Many students do this in addition to studying their native languages in the evenings and on weekends. How fortunate it is that many of them are bilingual! Their rich cultures are assets to our school and community. |
