Band Registration

Registration to join band for the 2009-10 school year is May 10th and 11th at Highland Elementary School (4:00 - 7:00 p.m.).

Band Info

Welcome to the instrumental music program! Some of our goals include helping students make music alone and with others, develop learning strategies and thinking skills, and to continue encouraging a life-long appreciation of music.

The instrumental music program provides instruction for band students in small-group lessons and full-group rehearsals. Concerts are presented in January and April. Instruction begins during the summer after the fourth grade year in school. Fifth grade students new to Greenleaf also have the opportunity to join the band program.

After instrument selection and the registration process, students begin their instrumental music lessons during the summer. Students receive instruction in a small group setting. Seven lessons of 30-45 minutes in length are offered during the four-week summer period. There is a $60.00 tuition fee for this program.

In the fall, in addition to weekly lessons, students also become members of a full band which begins rehearsal in October. Rehearsals are once each week, before school in the gym, for one hour. Concerts are presented at school during the winter and late spring.

Band F.A.Q.

Who can participate in elementary band?
All fourth grade students are invited to participate in band. Please view the summer band program as an opportunity for a new musical experience.

Success on an instrument is most often determined by the desire to succeed, and the discipline to practice frequently. Progress is directly related to individual effort more than "natural ability."

How will my child choose an instrument?
Instrument selection is based on the student's personal choice, physical characteristics necessary to play the instrument (including jaw structure, teeth and lip formation, hand size, etc.) and also the instrumentation needed to provide a well-balanced band. Your child will meet briefly with Mr. Sackreiter to help in the selection of an instrument best suited to his or her personal characteristics.

When and where are lessons offered?
Seven lessons of 30-40 minutes each are offered during summer band. All lessons will be given at Greenleaf Elementary School. Summer lessons begin the week of July 6th and will end on Thursday, July 30th, 2009.

How does my child join the band?

Step 1: Indication of Interest
Fill out the "Band Interest Form" and return it to your homeroom teacher.

Step 2: Instrument Selection (April)
After your child selects an instrument with Mr. Sackreiter, a form will be sent home indicating the results of this meeting.

Step 3: Registration (May)
Parents attend registration at Highland Elementary on May 10 or 11, 2010. During registration, parents will:

  1. Make arrangements for an instrument trial-plan with a music store or the band director (if playing a district-owned instrument).
  2. Purchase a lesson book and other supplies.
