Featured Artist

Georgia O'Keefe
Georgia O'Keeffe was born in 1887 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She was an American painter and a pioneer of Modern Art. Most people know her as the artist that painted enlarged flowers. She also painted other subjects such as: lakes, buildings, cityscapes, bones and landscapes.

One of her earliest memories is laying out in her yard in the summer time. Her mother would place her on a large colorful patchwork quilt to play with her toys.

She married a photographer named Stieglitz, and they spent winters in New Mexico. After his death she settled there and painted desert landscapes. She also liked to travel, and many of her paintings were inspired by views of the earth, sky and clouds as seen from an airplane.

Best known for her near abstract paintings, Georgia O'Keeffe died in 1886, at the age of 91. She is a well known artist, and as a woman artist found it difficult to be accepted by the art world. She purposely dressed very conservatively in black, high necked blouses and skirts. She would pull her hair back so she would not look glamorous in order to be more fully accepted by other artists.
