Reading Recovery is a literacy intervention program for first graders. It's designed to help students achieve early success in reading and writing. Reading Recovery students receive 30 minutes of individualized instruction each day with a Reading Recovery teacher who has received specialized training in working with children who are beginning readers and writers. The goal of Reading Recovery is to enable students to read and write independently at an average level in a short period of time, and to reduce the number of students needing intervention in later grades.

Reading Recovery first came to the United States in 1985 and now has established sites in 49 states. This program was implemented in Independent School District 196 in 1992-93.
