A very special “THANK YOU” to the EVHS learning community and the PAK volunteers for the fabulous Teacher Appreciation Day on May 14. Eastview will provide a Summer School program from June 16–July 10 (17 days) for Eastview High School students wishing to earn credit towards graduation.  Class will not be held on Thursday July 3 or Friday July 4 in observation of the Independence Day holiday.  Courses offered will include English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Wellness for grades 9–12.  The students can also prepare for Basic Standards Testing through their summer school courses.  These courses will be for make-up credit only.  The courses will run Monday through Friday with each day organized into three periods:  Period 1 from 7:30–9:15, Period 2 from 9:20–11:05 and Period 3 from 11:10–12:55.  Each period is worth the equivalent of one quarter.  A student, therefore, could make up as much as 2.25 credits or three quarter length courses if he/she signs up for all three periods.  Registration forms are available in the Guidance Office.  Any questions in regard to the summer school program should be directed to program director Thomas Sharp at thomas.sharp@district196.org

EVHS Introduces B.O.L.T.S. 2008Building Our Learning Throughout Summer!

We are building on our traditional summer programs by offering a series of elective-credit academic camps focusing on enrichment and skill development.  Check out our BOLTS 2008 Registration Guide, with course descriptions (13 courses available, from each of the four core content areas as well as several elective areas), session scheduling (four different sessions running from June 23 – July 24), and registration information (register online!).  These camps and courses are tuition-based, with financial aid available.  Contact Jodi Hanson – EVHS Student Services (952.431.8920 or jodi.hanson@district196.org) with questions or for more information.

 

Parents of Juniors:  Your response to the Senior Party Tear-Down has been good, but we need 30 more parent volunteers.  An early showing from you is needed to quickly clear the Commons Area for the next scheduled event: ACT testing at 8:00 am. Please volunteer if you have a couple hours to give on Saturday, June 14 at 5:00am. The tear-down consists of both light work (boxing up decorations, recording items for next year , clearing tables, removing hanging paper decorations and strings of lights) and heavy duty work (dismantling large wooden sets, loading and unloading reusable pieces to and from a large U-Haul truck). Bring gloves, power tools, scrapers, hammers and the caffeinated beverage of your choice. District 196 Youth Connection Council is conducting a pet food/supply drive for the Minnesota Valley Humane Society.  Donate items from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday, May 31 at the Apple Valley Teen Center.  Items needed: hand sanitizer, white knotted raw-hide chews, dry dog or cat food (IAMS or Purina), small dog treats (for training), dog durable chew toys, cat litter, litter scoops, wooden spoons (for small animals to chew), disposable plastic or Styrofoam bowls, cupcake liners, plastic zipper sandwich bags, 9x13 aluminum cake pans, paper towels, 39 gal garbage bags, any color copy paper, laminating sheets, cleaning supplies and new or used animal crates.

If you were unable to attend the Senior Meeting you can turn in your blue sheets on Tuesday in the Student Service area to receive senior privilege wrist bands.

Students may register on line for the ACT test at www.actstudent.org and www.collegeboard.com for the SAT test.  Registration packets are also available in the Guidance Office.

 

Senior Men Attending U of Minnesota: Beta Theta PI is offering scholarships to Senior Male Students who will be attending the University of Minnesota the Fall of 2008.  Students are NOT required to join the fraternity.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office and the deadline is June 2.

Would you like to enrich your children’s lives?  Help them make an international friend?  Give them a summer to remember?  Earn a discount on the next French trip?  Host a French student this summer!  There are still some students who need host families.  You provide room and board, include them in your regular summer activities and get an incredible experience for your family and maybe make a life-long friend.  If you cannot host, perhaps you have a friend or neighbor who might be interested in hosting, so please pass this along to them.  Students are coming in three groups: June 16-July 17, July 8-28 and July 9-28.  If you are interested in hearing more, please contact Mary Kuettner at mary.kuettner@district196.org

 

Congratulations to senior Blake Hanson for earning a $2,500 scholarship from the Upper-Midwest Chapter of the National Television Academy. The NATAS provides scholarships for high school seniors interested in a career in television broadcasting or electronic media.  Blake was awarded the scholarship by WCCO reporter Jason DeRusha at the Flash banquet last week.

ATHLETIC ANNOUNCEMENTS                                                                                               

Graduating Seniors who are playing college athletics next year have the opportunity to lift and condition at Eastview throughout the summer months for the Alumni cost of $50.  Register online or with the flier that will be mailed home soon.

The Storm Center is the strength & conditioning area of Eastview that is utilized by Phy Ed classes each period of every day, after school by Eastview students, athletes, & alumni, and throughout the summer months by various strength & conditioning programs.Why is the Storm Center important and why do we need your help? Opening Lifting & Super Group registration is open for any athletes & students who want to maintain or build up their strength through the summer months.  Fliers will be mailed home & registration is also available online.

 

On May 29, come show off your volleyball skills at the Lightning Volleyball Spring Tournament. Teams can be co-ed & need to have at least 6 players to compete.  Cost is $5/player registered.  Current Eastview students only.  The tournament champion will challenge returning Eastview volleyball players. This tournament will be officiated by the Eastview volleyball team.  Team registrations will be taken until Wednesday at lunch!! 

 

An informational football meeting will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, May 28th at 7:00 am and 2:35pm in room C-250.  Anyone interested in playing next year should attend one of the meetings.

 

All softball players grades 9-12: there is a meeting today after school in room C134.  Please bring all uniforms and equipment with you.  You must see Coach Haugh if you are unable to attend this important meeting.

 

The Lightning Varsity Baseball team got the playoffs started off on the right foot as they beat Park of Cottage Grove 10-3 Friday night.  The offensive power surge was led by Nick Gorski, Erik Fabry and Cory Eul all of whom hit homeruns.  The Lightning continued the offensive onslaught the next day as they pounded out thirteen hits and eleven runs in route to an 11-2 victory over Simley.  Catcher Joe Peters led the way with 3 hits and 5 RBI’s.  The Lightning will be back in action today at 5 PM over at the Apple Valley Legion field against Park of Cottage Grove.

 

SPORT SCORES                                                                                              

The Lightning softball season came to an end Friday.  Eastview opened up the afternoon with a 1-0 win over Lakeville South.  The game’s only run came on an RBI single by Freshman Angela Koppen, scoring Lindsay Spanton in the 2nd inning.  That was all the offense Lightning pitcher Laura Brenberg needed.  In the second game Friday, Eastview fell to Burnsville 6-1.  The loss to Burnsville was the final game for seniors Abbey Burkel, Kari Johnston, Susie Kyllo, & Danielle Fraser.  Best of luck to them next year and beyond!

 

 

ARTS AND ACTIVITIES                                                                                          

Reminder to all DECA members that there will be a meeting tomorrow at 2:30 in Room C237.  We will be electing offices for next year.  If you are interested in running for a position, you applications are due to Ms. Mohr by the end of the day. 

 

Attention all Math Teamers – Our end of year celebration will be held on Thursday at 5:00 pm at Old Chicago in Apple Valley.  All participants are welcome!  Cost is $12.  Please see Mr. Haugh with questions.

 

SADD will have one more meeting tomorrow morning in A101 at 7:00 am to discuss plans for the end of the year festivities!

 

Attention all math teamers: we will hold our end-of-the-year dinner at Old Chicago in Apple Valley this Thursday at 5 pm.  Please let Mr. Haugh know before Thursday if you will be able to attend.  The cost is $12, and is payable to Mr. Haugh on or before Thursday. 

 

A few select members of the Eastview Speech and Debate team competed for the first time at the National Catholic Forensics League tournament in Appleton, WI this weekend.  We had an amazing inaugural event winning two team awards and taking 2 of the 10 champion awards.

Daniel S. Masterson, Jr. Awards of Excellence in Forensics. (only 5 awarded)

No other team in Minnesota won this Forensic award.
