SPORT SCORES

The Lightning Varsity Baseball could not recover from a tough first inning and lost to Lakeville North 15-5.  The Lightning will be back in action on Friday night at Apple Valley Legion field with the opponent yet to be determined.

On Saturday, the JV Baseball team split their 2 games, defeating Como Park in the first game 14-1 and losing to Minnetonka 6-1.  Scott Wobshall pitched 4 strong innings and Taylor Augustin cleaned up the 5th on the mound. Hitting was plentiful. Cody Groskreutz, Jack McDevitt, and Sam Foy each had 2 hits and 3 RBI. Pete Zukanoff, Andy Gench, and Joel Berterlsen each doubled in the cause.  In the second game, errors plus walks and hit batters were the theme as we spotted the Tonka team 6 runs (2 were unearned) until we answered back with our lone run on a tremendous spank over the left field fence and batting cages by Andy Gench.  Gench was 2-3 against a great pitcher as was evidenced by the fact that our entire team had only 5 hits for the game. On Monday night, the JV played its last game of the season against a team and pitcher that shut us out last time 10-0. Last time we played, it was about 29 °F and our bats were just as cold. This evening it started out raining and the mound was treacherous. We spotted them 2 runs in the 1st and two more in the 2nd innings due to walks, hit batters and timely hits. Scotty Wobschall came into the game and pitched magnificently from the 3rd to the 7th. Lakeville still battled and got runs but he pitched very well and made them earn everything. We kept the lead most of the game but Lakeville battled back to go ahead in the 2nd and tie it in the 7th. The guys in royal blue, black, and white, really showed up to bat today. Everyone on the team had great at-bats. The Lakeville starter who had looked like an all-star the first time we played him, was still very good but we outlasted his curveball and worked the counts to hit the pitches we needed to. I am proudest of this fact because our guys came of age today and can now go onto a varsity experience ready to compete against that kind of top-level pitching. We drove in runners who reached base with timely hits starting with Joel Bertelsen’s 3 run homerun in the 1st inning to give us the lead.  Scott couldn’t get the 3rd out in the 7th and so Blake Hagen came into relieve him. Unfortunately the Panthers scratched and clawed their way back to score 4 in the inning and tie the game.  With the Panthers still threatening, Blake quickly closed the door with the score tied at 13-13. With one out, Matt Lilledahl worked the count with a great at-bat and then hit a single. Andy Dzieken drilled a curve ball to deep center field over a leaping centerfielder. Matt came charging around 2nd and the coach, using his limited intellect, decided to hold Matt at 3rd base much to the chagrin of the entire stadium crowd. It took the hitting talents of Jack McDevitt to end the game by hitting a solid line drive down the first base line and Lilledahl was able to safely reach home for the 14-13 win.  Joel Bertelsen was 3-4 with a homerun and 5 RBI. Cody Groskreutz was 3-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Jack McDevitt was 2-3 and had 2 RBI. Robbie Sikich was 2-3 and 1 RBI. The team finished the season 12-7. Thanks to John Kruegel for a great season of batting practice and thanks to you JV guys. You really battled all season and were a tremendous bunch. You are quality people, great competitors, and  solid baseball players. Your future is bright and today you were particularly impressive. Way to end the year. Now it is onto playoffs for the varsity and summer ball for the rest of us.  Good luck to you all!!!!

The 9A Baseball team defeated Lakeville North 4-1 yesterday to bring its season to a close with a 14-3 record.  Ty McDevitt pitched 6 strong innings and Tom Jerle got the save with a scoreless 7th.  Taylor Branstad led the offense.

The 9B Baseball finished off their fabulous season by getting smoked 13-2 in 5 innings. This loss ended a 13-game winning streak.  With the rain and cold weather came an “off day” for the team’s first 2 pitchers, but John Melzarek came in to finish off the game in “John Melzarek fashion,” pitching extremely well.  The team’s offense started off well with Tyler Velin, Sean Devine, and Melzarek getting hits, with Velin and Devine scoring early.  After that, the offense cooled off, and the boys couldn’t buy a run.  Lakeville North’s pitching was on top of their game and their defense wasn’t bad either.  Eastview’s defense was less than par having a hard time coming up with big plays, and also committing a few errors in clutch situations.  The boys finish the season 13-3.

The Boys’ Varsity Golf team came up short of their goal of making it to the state tournament yesterday finishing in 4th place at the Section 3AAA tournament at Keller. Individual state qualifier, Junior Kyle Nesheim, led the way for the Lightning with a 75. Other contributing scores included senior captain Johnny Greene and junior Joe Petrulo with 78’s. Freshman Max Tylke also counted in the scoring with an 81. Johnny Greene ends his six year varsity career as the most decorated and naturally talented golfer in team history. Wish Kyle Nesheim the best as he competes in the 3A State Tournament in two weeks at Bunker Hills. Congratulations on a great season!!

Congratulations to the EVHS Girls JV Golf team for their win over Burnsville last night.  Meet medalist was Alley Poquet along with other meet placers, Jenny Chamberlain, Chelsea Ochtera and Shannon Deutsch.

The Lightning Varsity Softball team opened up the region 3AAA playoffs Monday by avenging an earlier drubbing by the Rosemount Irish with a thrilling 4-2 win in nine innings.  Sophomore Laura Brenberg pitched all nine innings, striking out 12 while allowing only 4 hits.  Lindsay Spanton and Susie Kyllo collected three hits apiece to pace the offense.
