STAFF APPRECIATION DAY - Wednesday, May 14
Volunteers are needed to arrange food trays and deliver them to the staff offices beginning at 6:45 am until 9:30.  Meet at the North Doors that morning.
If you would like to donate a food item, we are asking for: Bars, cookies, muffins, breakfast breads, bagels and cream cheese, fruit (washed, cut-up and ready to serve), snack foods, etc. to be dropped off at the upper/north entrance doors between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. on May 14.  Volunteers will be available to pick up your donations "curbside”. Monetary donations will be used to purchase juice and paper items.  You may send a check to the office made out to 'EVHS PAK' placed in an envelope marked "Staff Appreciation". Our All School Awards Assembly has been moved from May 28 to June 4 beginning at 8:51 am in the Main Gym.  Please note this change on your calendars.

 

EVHS Introduces B.O.L.T.S. 2008Building Our Learning Throughout Summer!

We are building on our traditional summer programs by offering a series of elective-credit academic camps focusing on enrichment and skill development.  Check out our BOLTS 2008 Registration Guide, with course descriptions (13 courses available, from each of the four core content areas as well as several elective areas), session scheduling (four different sessions running from June 23 – July 24), and registration information (register online!).  These camps and courses are tuition-based, with financial aid available.  Contact Jodi Hanson – EVHS Student Services (952.431.8920 or jodi.hanson@district196.org) with questions or for more information.

 

Parents of Juniors: The parents of Juniors are responsible for taking down the Senior Party decorations at the conclusion of this years party:  Saturday, June 14 starting at 5:00 am.  This is the first step in creating a successful party for the Class of 2009.  We will need at least 70 Junior Parent volunteers to help tear down decorations, saving what can be reused, and moving the items to our off-site storage. This is a large undertaking but with a lot of volunteers can be done quickly.

SENIOR SECTION                                                    

There will be a senior meeting in the Theater this Friday, May 16 from 9:35 am -10:10 am.  You will be dismissed from your third hour class at 9:35 to attend the meeting.

 

We are looking for candid photos from the past four years to be place in the Senior Video.  There is a drop box in the Main Office for pictures.  Please label them if you want them to be returned. Pictures can also be e-mailed to evhsseniorvideo@hotmail.com

COLLEGE AND SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION                                               

Deadline registration for the June 14 ACT test today.  LATE Registration for the June 7 SAT test is May 15.  Students may register on line for the ACT test at www.actstudent.org and www.collegeboard.com for the SAT test.  Registration packets are also available in the Guidance Office.

 

Senior Men Attending U of Minnesota: Beta Theta PI is offering scholarships to Senior Male Students who will be attending the University of Minnesota the Fall of 2008.  Students are NOT required to join the fraternity.  Applications are available in the Guidance Office and the deadline is June 2.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS                                                

Student Cultural Exchange to China-Interested in visiting China for two weeks in July?  Any student who is currently a sophomore or junior is eligible to be a part of the trip, which includes a home stay and tour of Beijing. An informational meeting for parents and students will be held on Thursday, May 15 at 6:00 pm in the forum of the School of Environmental Studies

 

Students can pick up their honors transcripts in the Guidance Office this week during their lunch period or after school.  

 

Students who have not received their Q3 report cards can pick them up the Guidance Office.  Report cards will not be mailed home.  Parents and students can also access their report cards from their student/parent portal.  

 

Would you like to enrich your children’s lives?  Help them make an international friend?  Give them a summer to remember?  Host a French student this summer!  There are many students who still need host families.  You provide room and board, include them in your regular summer activities and get an incredible experience for your family.  Students are coming in three groups: June 16-July 17, July 8-28 and July 9-28.  An informational meeting will be held Sunday, April 27 in Bloomington.  If you are interested in hearing more, please contact Mary Kuettner at mary.kuettner@district196.org .  

 

ATHLETIC ANNOUNCEMENTS                                                                                               

There will be a Boys’ Basketball meeting on Thursday May 15 at 7:00 a.m. or 2:45 pm in room A204.  The purpose of the meeting is to discuss summer opportunities for weight training, conditioning, shooting, and playing.  See Coach Gerber or Coach Harris with any questions.

 

Auditions for the 2008-2009 Lightning Dance Team will take place this week, in the Main Gym here at Eastview. Registration starts at 3:00 pm on Monday and the tryout workshop will go from 3:30-6:00 pm each day. Questions??  Please see Coach Mahr in the Dance Studio or Coach Gerber in the C2 office.

 

The Girl’s Track and Field team will be selling Gerten’s Plant Cards. Each card sells for $25 and can be used to purchase plants at Gerten’s. They do not expire. The last week of Intramural Golf is this coming week. Sign up for tee times outside of Mr. Frost’s Room. There will be a short presentation of prizes in Room A 207 on Wednesday, May 14.

 

LIVESTRONG Day is the Lance Armstrong Foundation's one-day initiative to raise awareness and funds for the cancer fight. LIVESTRONG Day 2008 will occur tomorrow.  Everyone is encouraged to wear yellow that day.  From 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm on the fields to the East of the stadium you will find Eastview's own initiative to celebrate National LIVESTRONG Day (in case of inclement weather, the event will be in the Commons).  There will be a silent auction, cancer educational materials, Apple Valley's own Minnesota Swarm player, Colin Achenbach will be in attendance, and donations will be accepted on behalf of the Lance Armstrong Foundation.  At the Boy's Lacrosse Section Playoff game that evening, local musician, Tim Mahoney will be singing the National Anthem.  The Lacrosse Players will be wearing yellow socks!  We hope to see you there!  For more information, please call Lynn Freeman at 6 51-452-6123.

Intramural Golf is in its last week. Please sign up for tee times outside Mr. Frost’s room. There will be a short awards meeting on Wednesday in A 207 at 2:30 if there are no cancellations.

 

SPORT SCORES                                                                                              

The Lightning Varsity Baseball team finished off a solid week by defeating Bloomington Kennedy 16-6.  Offensively, the team was led by Erik Klefsaas’ 4 hits and 4 stolen bases.  The Lightning are back in action today at Eagan.

 

The Boys Varsity Golf team traveled to the Mankato 2 day tournament this past weekend and successfully defended their title with a 2 shot victory. Taking 1st place medalist honors for the 2nd straight year was senior captain Johnny Greene with a tournament record total of 147. Taking 8th place and medaling for the 2nd straight year was Junior Joe Petrulo with a 158 total. The Lightning continue Lake Conference play today with a home meet at Valleywood.

 

Last week was productive for the Girls Golf Team!  Thursday, the JV team took first place against Red Wing, Apple Valley, and Burnsville – with Dannie Erickson, Caitlin Ochtera and Laura Appleton all medaling (2nd, 3rd and 5th places, respectively).  Alley Poquette scored for the team as well.

 

The Girls Varsity Golf Team finished in second place against Lakeville North and Lakeville South at their fourth Lake Conference match held at Heritage Links.  Anna Drahos placed 5th overall and was joined by Ally Huang, Kristi Opitz and Bekka Zuehlke in scoring for the Lightning.  The girls played in the Owatonna Invitational over the weekend and took 3rd place overall.  Medaling for Eastview was Bre Mathiesen in 6th place.  Also scoring for the Lightning women were Ally Huang, Anna Drahos and Kelly Uhrich.  Wish the girls good luck today as they participate in the Lake Conference tournament at Phalen golf course in St. Paul

 

The Eastview Varsity Softball team finished 2nd in the Lightning tournament held on a rainy Saturday this past weekend.  Eastview opened up with a 6-0 win over northern Minnesota powerhouse Hermantown, led by sophomore Allie Merkley’s 2 hits, including a homerun.  In game two, the Lightning trailed 7-2 entering the 7th inning, with very little in the way of offense outside of Ashley Hunt’s homerun.  Still trailing by 3 with two outs and the bases loaded, senior Abbey Burkel hit a grand slam home run to give Eastview a stunning 8-7 win over top-ranked North St. Paul.  Eastview fell in the championship game to Park Cottage Grove, despite a 4-hit performance by sophomore Lindsay Spanton.  Eastview travels to Eagan today, and finishes the Lake conference season at home against Kennedy on Wednesday

 

The Lightning finished the weekend winning two and losing two. On Friday, they defeated Rosemount by a score of 7 - 1.  Macaela Karnick lead the way with a double, triple and an RBI.  At the Eastview Great 8 Tournament on Saturday, the Lightning dropped their first game to Park of Cottage Grove by a score of 7 - 3 but came back to defeat Lakeville South 3 -1.  The third game was played in a cold rain and both teams scored early and often.  Unfortunately, the Lightning ended up on the short end and lost 16 - 12. The Lightning begins the last week of the season today with a game at Eagan where they hope to improve their current 10 - 6 record.

 

The Freshman Softball team defeated Benilde on Thursday by the score of 11-0 in 5 innings.  Solid pitching by Paige Palkovich, catching by Carissa Miller, and fielding by Rachel Spika and Sophie Running were integral in the win.

 

The Varsity Tennis team secured 2nd place in the tough Lake Conference by Defeating the Blaze of Burnsville 4-3. Outstanding play was turned in by Will, Josh, Evan, Jon, Kevin, and Rohit.  The guys will travel to Burnsville on Thursday for the first round of sections

 

Boys Varsity Track and Field:  Record setting was the theme of the district championship at Eastview last Friday.  Franky Veldman Placed 1st in the high jump with a school record setting jump of 6'6''.  this jump is also the second best jump in the state right now.  Other first place finishes included:  Will jackson 100 and 200, Marty Maloney 1600, Ryan Mccormick 110 and 300 hurdles, Kyle Vossen Triple Jump, Matt Karnick Pole Vault. and the 4x800 of Andy Kump, Hunter Abramson, Tony Hyde, and Jeff Debele.  Second place was secured by: Andre Hunt 400, Jeff Debele 800, Steve Smith 110 hurdles, Blake Hanson 300 hurdles, Kyle Vossen Long Jump, and David Pearcill Triple Jump.  rounding out the day with a third place finish was Ryan McCormick 100, Tim Journey 800, Ian Sharp 3200, Black hanson 110 Hurdles, Josh Weinburg 300 hurdles, Shawn Wells Long jump, Brad Wetjen Disc, tyler Terry shot and Ryan Oneil Pole Vault. 

 

ARTS AND ACTIVITIES                                                                                          

EVHS Book Club will be meeting on May 15 at Barnes and Noble in Apple Valley at 7:00 pm. We are reading Jodi Picoult’s Plain Truth. New members are always welcome. Hope to see you on May 15!

  

Juniors and Seniors – On Thursday, May 15 our Eastview SADD program will host a Mock Crash in the bus corral from 8:10–9:30.  The purpose of this event is the help define the importance of making safe decisions in the upcoming prom and graduation season.  Juniors and seniors will be dismissed from class at 8:10 to attend this event.

 

Pahl’s Market Fundraiser for the Eastview Speech team begins in 3 days! While shopping at Pahl’s starting today through June 1, please remember to mention the EVHS Speech Team.  Pahl’s will donate 10% of your total purchase to the team.   Members of our Speech Team will be competing in the national competition in June and your support is very much appreciated!  Thank you.

 

Prom Tickets will be sold Tuesday thru Friday this week during 5th hour in the Commons.  Friday is the last day to purchase a ticket.

 

The last School Dance of the year is this Friday night…8-11 pm in the Student Commons for all students; seniors get to stay an extra hour from 11pm-midnight!  The cost is $7 per person or $6 w/ a donation for the food shelf.  All seniors pay just $5 (you must have your student ID for the discounted rate).  It’s a COSTUME PARTY, so get dressed up and join us for the last dance at EVHS for the 0708 school year!

 

The Relay for Life Co-ed Badminton Tournament will be held on the evening of Tuesday, May 20 from 6:30 to 10:00 pm. All Eastview students and staff are welcomed to sign-up at lunch next week. The tournament will consist of a singles and doubles bracket. The cost is $5 per person or $10 per doubles duo. See Mr. Kelly or Ms. Mathews with any questions or concerns.
