PARENT SECTION                                                   

Perspectives on Parenting presents Challenging Adolescent Behaviors: Successful Problem-Solving Strategies within Your Family” at 7:00 pm, Monday, February 4 at Falcon Ridge Middle SchoolMary Sheedy, Kurcinka, a former ISD196 parent educator, nationally recognized speaker, author of 4 books on parenting and a parent of 2 grown children will speak about the challenges of raising teenagers and understanding adolescence.  Mary will give sound, common sense ideas to develop successful problem solving strategies within your family.   The presentation will include tips for building the relationship that keeps your teens working with you—even during the tough times.

 

Parents: It’s that time of year again to show your student how very much you care! Send them a VAL-O-GRAM at school on February 14. FCCLA is selling flowers, chocolate pretzels, and chocolate covered rice krispie bars to be delivered to your child 7th hour on Valentine’s Day. GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS                                                           

The Apple Valley Police Department is taking applications for you to join the Police Academy.  You have until February 1 to apply.  You can experience interesting knowledge on how law enforcement works.  See Diane Mathews to sign up!


COLLEGE AND SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION                                                                   

LATE registration for the February 9 ACT test is thru Friday.  Register at www.actstudent.org.

 

Junior Girls!!!!  The American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring the Minnesota Girls State program at Bethel University the week of June 8 thru 14.  This is a great opportunity for young women who are interested in the functions of Minnesota government.  Information and applications are available in the Guidance Office.

 

Seniors!!!  The Minnesota Masonic Charities Signature Scholarship application is due February 15.  Five scholarships are awarded for $5,000.00 renewable for up to $20,000 for up to four years.  See Guidance Office for an application.

ATHLETIC ANNOUNCEMENTS                                                                                      

The 2008 Futsal Tournament registration forms are now located in the Main Office.  Do you like to place soccer?  Do you like tournaments?  If so, find some friends and make up a team for this Saturday of Futsal! 

 

Girl’s Golf pre-season golf meeting will be held today after school at 2:45 in Mrs. Mathew's room (A307). Seniors will be discussing team clothing and upcoming captain practices. SPORT SCORES                                                                                              

The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team improved to 11-4 on the season last night with an impressive 74-57 victory over the Rosemount Irish.  Defensive intensity, strong rebounding, and free throw shooting proved to be the difference in the game last night.  Sophomore guard Vinard had 4 steals to go along with 5-for-6 from the free throw line.  Michael Grinnell also had 6 steals and Junior Carlos Emory grabbed 7 rebounds in addition to his 13 points.  Ethan Thomforde lead a balanced scoring attack with 16 as four players scored in double figures for the Lightning.  Next up is a road game at Chaska on Friday night.

 

The JV Boys Basketball improved to 11-3 on the season with a win at home vs.Rosemount. The final score was 43-39. Chris Hall led all scorers with 12 points.

 

The 10th Grade Boy’s Basketball team won a tough game last night by defeating the undefeated Rosemount Irish 48-44.  Defense was the key to our victory.  Austin Brown had 3 steals, while Michael Myslinski also had a steal.  Michael Rademacher helped the team with his hard nose defense.  Karl Otto led the team offensively with 17 points, with 3 back-to-back 3 pointers. Isaiah Thomas had 13 big points.  Cory Styles helped the team with tough defense and 8 points.  Our next game will be Friday at Chaska.

 

The Lightning Girls’ Varsity Basketball team kept their perfect conference record alive, running it to 14-0, with a road victory over Rosemount.  The Lightning played a strong team game at both ends of the floor building a 15 point halftime lead and never looked back.  The balanced Lightning offense was led by Sam Mehr with 18 points, followed closely by Brittnye McSparron and Danae Moore with 14 points each.  Danae also led the team in rebounds with 9, with Emily Kaus snagging 7.  The Lightning return to Lake Conference action on Friday with a home game against Chaska.  Thanks to our fans who braved the cold to get to the cold gym and support us last night.  Hope to see you on Friday.  Go Lightning! 

 

The JV Boys Hockey team came home with a 4 – 2 win against Chaska.  Scoring in the first period was Shane Sjostrom assisted by Cory Hanson.  Chaska scored twice in the second to lead the game.  In the third period the boys put 3 in the net to win the game with goals by Shane Sjostrom (assisted by Luke Trepanier and Ben Parranto), Luke Trepanier (assisted by Erik Ritacco), and Clay DeNicola (assisted by Ross Lundholm and Kyle Robotka).  Michael Berger was good between the posts with 23 saves.

 

ARTS AND ACTIVITIES                                                                                           

Plan now to attend the second annual Coffee Commotion: February 2, East Commons. Admission is only $4.00 for an evening of music and fun.   

 

The Annual NHS Dodgeball Tournament is coming up February 7 at 7:00 pm.  Sign up and register your team during lunch starting this Monday, the 28. It's $10 a person and six players on a team. There are prizes for categories like best team costume, and this year Dodgeball t-shirts will be on sale for everyone. It's a double elimination tournament, so get a team together to dip, dive, and dodge!

 

Can anyone stop the Banana Slugs?!?!?!  The team of Alex Rogers, Andy Gensch, Brandan Peterson and Alex Sertic are out to a commanding, undefeated lead in the IM Bowling league, going 15-0 in the first three weeks.  Individual honors go to Matt Barker who bowled a 214 and Marit Fraune who rolled a 157.  Come on out on to Apple Place Bowl after school on Wednesday, you never know when Aly Peer will do her next Turkey Dance.
