Congratulations to Eastview senior Sam Mehr for being named one of six finalists for the St. Paul Downtown Lion’s Club Female Athlete of the Year.  Sam has been a key member of both our soccer and basketball programs the last four years including two straight state tourney appearances with her soccer team and two straight 3rd place finishes at state with her basketball team the last two years.  This award has been in place since 1943 and has been awarded to a very elite group of athletes including Paul Molitor, Dave Winfield, Joe Mauer and last year Michael Floyd on the male side.  Female winners have included Natalie Darwitz, Erica McKenzie and last year Jackie Voigt.  Previous finalists for the award from Eastview include John Shevlin, Jake Machacek, Jamie Broback, Brianna Hassett and Brittnye McSparron.  The awards and recognition for this prestigious honor will be presented at a banquet on May 12th.  The luncheon event will be held at the Prom Center in Oakdale starting at 12 noon.

She was earlier named Eastview High School’s recipient of the Athena Award in 2008-09.  The Athena Award is awarded to the “outstanding senior female athlete” in each school.  The award is based on excellence in individual sports or for participation and accomplishments in team sports.  Criteria considered includes the number of sports they participate in, the number of varsity letters earned, and post-season awards earned.  Athena is the Goddess of Wisdom and Skills. She was brave and possessed the essence of all that is noble.  Legend tells us that she possessed the gifts of dignity, power, and youth, making her invincible.  Sam will be recognized at the St. Paul Athena Award banquet later this spring.  Congratulations to Sam!
