***Mission and Goals

The Mission of the Eastview Girls’ Golf team:

The Eastview High School Girls’ Golf Team purpose is to be successful and win at the highest levels of varsity competition.  We do this by:

  • training girls in the skills and strategies of competitive golf,
  • developing in each girl an appreciation for the traditions of the game, and
  • representing the school and community with the highest degree of pride, integrity, and sportsmanship possible

The Eastview Girls Golf Team Goals:

    • To compete well at the varsity level,
    • To improve significantly, and
    • To have a positive, upbeat attitude everyday
    • To have a lot of fun doing it

As far as competition is concerned, we consistently play the elite teams in the state, either in our Lake Conference match schedule or at any of the tournaments we attend.  With respect to helping each girl improve her game significantly each spring, we focus our practices on the four cornerstones of excellent golf:  full swing, short game, course strategy, and mental toughness.  Finally, we make enjoying the game of golf our priority.  Golf is a great game, and we never want to lose sight of how much fun it can be.  We enjoy being together.  To foster team spirit and love for the game

To make it to the top echelons of competition in the state - Rosemount High School Coach Berry Wallin has laid out the steps to take very nicely; we need 4 to 6 girls who want to make golf their priority.  Click here to see how...

Thank you for your interest in girls’ golf. Golf is a great sport, and each spring we want to create a team that competes well, improves a lot, and has a lot of fun being together.

If you are willing to commit to the four principles below, then you are right for this team. We want girls on this team who have these goals in common with each other and are willing to make the effort necessary to achieve them.

We are inviting you to join this team only if you agree to:

- be chemically free,

- work hard,

- be prepared (have everything at school that you’ll need for practice/matches),

- contribute to the positive atmosphere of this team.

***MAKING THE TEAM

Varsity and Junior Varsity The top six girls as determined by scoring average on a given day will play Varsity, with players #7 -#10 ready as alternates. If any of the #1-#6 girls cannot play a match or tournament, the next girls will be asked in rank order starting with #7, the first alternate. The Varsity team will always be made up of the best available players on a given day. Players #1-#10 must always be available to play in all Lake Conference and Section 1AA practice rounds, matches, and tournaments. The next six girls as determined by scoring average on a given day will play Junior Varsity. If any of the #7-#12 girls cannot play a match or tournament, the next girls will be asked in rank order. If players #7, #8, and #9 have been playing a lot of Varsity matches, they may elect not to play in a JV event. A total of 18 - 20 girls will comprise the Varsity/JV team. The Varsity and JV teams practice five days each week.

Developmental- An in-house/traveling squad of 8 - 12 of mostly first year girls’ golfers designed to prepare them for competitive golf on the Junior Varsity team.

The Developmental team practices 2 - 3 days a week.

Attendance:

The coaches want every girl to be at every scheduled practice.

• Ask us about potential conflicts well ahead of time and get all absences excused by the coaches in person. Statements that you begin with “I am going to…” or “I have to…” are not welcome. Always ask.

• If you are not at practice, and we do not know where you are, you are unexcused.

• Do not miss practice for reasons like work, other sports teams, or appointments. These are unexcused.

• Do not send a friend to deliver an "I can't come to practice today” message. These are unexcused. We are paying the golf courses a lot of money for our practice privileges. We are going to use them. If you are sick, notify us that day by calling or emailing us.

• Anyone who misses three practices for unexcused reasons without making them up will be cut with no refund of the athletic fee, and another girl will be asked to move up to take her place.

***Lettering Guidelines

Golfers who play in 6 varsity matches, who shoot 4 varsity match rounds with a score of 50 or better for a 9 hole regulation course (par 35 or 36), who play in 3 varsity conference matches, or whose score counts for EVHS at the conference or region tournament will be considered by the coaching staff for a varsity letter.  When we win sections and advance to State, all players on Varsity squad will letter if appropriate behavior has been followed.  Good citizenship at EVHS is always a factor in awarding a letter.  Coaches recommendation. Players may be chosen to the varsity squad and not receive a varsity letter. Any students with a MSHSL suspension will not be considered for a letter for a period of one year.  Any girl who gets a MSHSL violation in her junior or senior year forfeits any possibility of ever being named a captain for the EVHS Girls' Golf team.

***What to Wear?

Please wear appropriate clothes:

• In order to swing the club, the golfer must be able to turn comfortably. This means that some clothes are not permitted. Short or tight skirts/shorts/pants, tank tops, wide-necked blouses or sweaters, T-shirts, torn jeans, bib overalls, and heeled shoes are not acceptable at any time throughout the season. Please be aware that it is incredibly awkward trying to coach someone who is not appropriately dressed for golf.

Our rule for practice: If it has a collar, it doesn’t need sleeves. If it has sleeves, it doesn’t need a collar.

• Be careful with watches or jewelry. Watches can cause tendonitis. Repeated impact loosens stones in rings. Please put these valuables in your golf bag for protection.

• For indoor practices, wear tennis shoes in the gym, and have a “scrunchie” for your hair. If the weather turns fair, be prepared for outdoor practices.

• For outdoor practices, wear warm clothes, and be prepared for rainy, cold weather. Keep a warm hat, a pair of gloves, and a waterproof rain jacket in your locker just in case. The weather changes frequently at this time of year so be prepared. When we go to the course, you must wear flat-bottomed shoes. No Doc Martens or cleated shoes will be allowed on the greens. Please do not wear cheap sunglasses. They distort your vision. Please wear waterproof, spikeless golf shoes. Have a golf hat with brim with you at all times.

• For matches, wear khakis or predetermined colored slacks or shorts and collared shirts. You got to look good to play good. Keep those warm, waterproof clothes handy just in case.

• Always have a waterproof windbreaker that you can put on in case of rain.

To be best prepared against rain and cold (listed in order of importance), make sure you have:

1. A great attitude!

2. Polypropylene or polypropylene/wool blend socks

3. Waterproof spikeless golf shoes (look for a two-year warranty)

4. Waterproof rain jacket (Gore-Tex is best but treated nylon works fine) with hood

5. Umbrella

6. Warm hat (stocking cap or beanie) or golf hat with visor

7. Cart gloves or other warm gloves

8. Polarfleece® or brushed fleece top

9. Waterproof rain pants (Gore-Tex or treated nylon)

10. Polarfleece® or brushed fleece pants (for under the rain pants)

What to put in your golf bag:

Items that should be in your golf bag include:

-all 14 of your golf clubs
-extra golf balls
-tees
-rulebook
-golf glove
-ball markers
-golf towel
-umbrella
-hat/visor
-extra shoe laces
-rain suit (a waterproof rain jacket at a minimum)
-kleenex
-golf pencils
-hairbinder to put back hair if needed
-bandaids
-a small notebook to help you remember your progress

Depending on the season, you will also want:

-a stocking cap
-mittens
-bug spray
-sun screen (no oils please)
-a water bottle
-snack

***SEASON ORIENTATION

Weeks 1 to 4.  Practices are Monday-Friday. Attendance will be kept. 2:30 PM sharp, team meeting, room A307.  Practice will then follow with a variety of the following:

  • “Rules of Golf” sessions.
  • Strength-training or cardio work.
  • 3/4 swing wedges, 3/4 swing eight iron shots, and putting drills.
  • Individual swing analysis.
  • Course strategy and gamesmanship sessions.
  • Team bonding activities.
  • Goal-setting discussions.

All of these practices are essential to anyone trying out for this year's team. If the schedule directs you to the Auxiliary Gym; we will meet at the scheduled time in the hallway just outside the gym entrance. Dress appropriately; athletic attire with tennis shoes. Bring a putter, #7 or #8 iron and pitching wedge. Later practice sessions may include a metal wood.

Weeks 3 to 5 .  This outdoor practice time will focus on preparing golfers to compete in golf.  Practices at Parkview will start at 2:45p.m. You are responsible for your own transportation to the golf course. Please carpool to minimize the disturbance to your parents’ schedules. You will be dismissed from the golf course. Please make appropriate accommodations for transportation home after practice. If you want to get a ride with or give a ride to a teammate either to or from practice, you must have a signed permission slip on file with Coach Boldus.  No exceptions. Players are to use great care when driving their own vehicles, and will not drive carelessly or recklessly.

Week 4 or 5 .   Qualifying will be 4-9 hole rounds.  The low 3, 9 hole scores for each player will be used to determine a rank order for Varsity, JV, and Developmental teams. New foursomes will be assigned each day.  The top eight to ten girls will make Varsity and the next eight to ten girls will make JV.  The remaining first year ninth or tenth graders will make the Developmental team.  Once the initial selections have been made, a player may be moved from one level to another in the best interests of the team at the discretion of the coaching staff.  (Some girls have already tried out.  Those girls who have posted a 9-hole competitive score under 50 in a varsity match, JV match, PGA Junior Tour, or AAU Junior Tour event are automatically on the team.  These girls will play with the girls qualifying to determine their place in the rank order. These girls will help with rulings and keep score for their group.)

Weeks 6 through 10.   Our competitive season is short but busy.  Varsity players have an 18 hole out-of-school tournament every week, plus at least another 9-hole match.  Stay ahead of your studies.  Girls who have played more than 27 competitive holes in a week may use a scheduled practice to get caught up with schoolwork/life.  If you are scheduled to play in a match and are absent from school, immediately notify your coach personally.  Ask the secretary to patch you through to your coach’s room.  We must know early in the day in order to find a replacement for you.

Travel: All players will be required to ride school vans to and from all away matches when school transportation is provided. Transportation is always provided when crossing I494. In some cases we will meet at the course. Please look up directions and have a plan. You will be notified ahead of time to prepare for and arrange rides. It is your responsibility to get to practice and meets on time. Carpooling is recommended.

***FEES AND EQUIPMENT

  • A fee of $10 will be charged for each trip to Golf Zone. We will practice there 2 times prior to tryouts. Varsity players may go to Golf Zone more often.
  • The Varsity, JV and Developmental will also need to buy team uniforms to be worn at matches. The booster club will off-set the cost by $30 per player.
  • We will have an order form at the beginning of practice for the team uniform. Included on the order form will be optional equipment, i.e. rain suit, golf shoes, underarmour, golf bag, etc…

Every Varsity and JV player needs a 54° to 56° sand wedge, a 5 or a 7 wood, and a quality putter.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

Players are expected to have appropriate golf equipment. If you already have clubs, please check the grips.  If they are worn and slippery, have them replaced them at a local golf shop ($3 a club on average).  If you want to buy a set of clubs, please check with me first.  You will want to go to a reputable shop that offers custom fitting and has a variety of equipment choices in your price range. Set a budget, it is easy to get caught up in the expense of the sport. The clubs you buy during your Freshman and Sophomore years should last for the duration of High School. Quality graphite shafts are beneficial for female golfers and youth players. As in many sports; you pay for what you get.
