The National Japan Bowl is a day long academic language competition
for high school students studying the Japanese language. Students are tested
on grammar, kanji, katakana, kotowaza, culture, current events and listening
comprehension. The competition is open to students of Japanese levels II, III,
and IV. Those who speak Japanese at home or have had significant exposure to
the language outside of the traditional high school curriculum are ineligible.
A team is made up of two or three players representing one level of competition.
Schools may submit a team for any or all three levels. Only one team per school,
per level is permitted.
Eastview teams have had remarkable success at the national competition.
An Eastview team placed 2nd in the nation at the Level IV competition in Washington,
D.C. in 2001. Eastview finished 8th in the nation in 1998-1999.
In 2003, Eastview students had great
success in the Minnesota Regional Japan Bowl (Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin).
Three
Eastview teams competed in the final round, one step from Washington DC.
4th year level - Eastview team took 2nd place in the region: Caitlin Dugan,
Stephanie Brakel, and Holly Helm. 2nd year level - Eastview took 2nd and 3rd
place in the region: 2nd: Whitney Flohr, John McConnell and Jon Friedman 3rd:
