Handbook

The Eastview High School instrumental department is a part of the comprehensive music department in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan/District 196 School District. Eastview, along with Apple Valley, Rosemount and Eagan high schools take great pride in their musical ensembles and performances. This is evident in the classes and activities provided for the students. This handbook will give you information about the many different instrumental music offerings at Eastview. Feel free to contact the band staff with any questions you may have and they'll be happy to answer whatever questions you may have.

CLASSES
Concert Ensembles:


Varsity Band - This group is a 9th grade ensemble that meets all year. The Varsity Band will study and rehearse the fundamentals of concert band, marching band, and pep band for selected performances. Individual band lessons are required on a regular basis. Attendance at all scheduled performances as well as a few evening rehearsals are required for the students enrolled in Varsity Band. The primary director for this group is Mr. Pasquerella.

Freshman Wind Ensemble - This group is a 9th grade ensemble that meets all year.. The Freshman Wind Ensemble will study and rehearse the fundamentals of concert band, marching band, and pep band for selected performances. Individual band lessons are required on a regular basis. Attendance at all scheduled performances as well as a few evening rehearsals are required for the students enrolled in Varsity Band. The primary director for this group is Mr. Henry.

Concert Band - This ensemble starts quarter two and runs through fourth quarter and consists of 10-11th graders. This group will study and perform wind music composed in a variety of musical styles and from different musical time periods. The course will include regular private band lessons. The band will perform at several public concerts and a clinic/contest. Attendance at these performances is required. All band students are expected to participate in selected pep band events. The primary director for this group is Mr. Harloff.

Symphonic Band - This ensemble starts quarter two and runs through fourth quarter and consists of 10-12th graders. This group will study and perform wind music composed in a variety of musical styles and from different musical time periods. The course will include regular private band lessons. The band will perform at several public concerts and a clinic/contest. Attendance at these performances is required. All band students are expected to participate in selected pep band events. The primary director for this group is Mr. Pasquerella.

Wind Ensemble - This ensemble starts quarter two and runs through fourth quarter and consists of 10-12th graders. This select group will study and perform advanced wind music composed in a variety of musical styles and from different musical time periods. The band will perform at several public concerts, the Lake Conference Band Festival and a clinic/contest. Attendance at these performances is required. The course will include regular private band lessons. All band students are expected to participate in selected pep band events. The primary director for this group is Mr. Henry.

Marching Band - The Marching Band is a highly visible and active musical ensemble which includes band students in grades 10-12. The group requires a significant time commitment. The band performs at all home football games, several marching band competitions and selected other venues such as professional sporting events. Attendance at these performances, as well as regular Monday and Thursday night rehearsals is required of all marching band members. Regular private band lessons are also required of all members. Included in this group is the color guard which is a specialized unit that uses precision dance and equipment to portray the visual aspect of the show. All band directors teach this group. The Head Director of the Marching Band is Mr. Harloff.

Classes:

Music Theory - This course is designed for serious musicians who are interested in expanding their knowledge and understanding of music theory. The course will include study of scales, chords, chord progressions, music analysis, ear training, basic composition, and music listening skills. This course would be valuable to all musicians and is especially recommended to students considering a college music major. The primary instruct for this class is Mr. Harloff.

ACTIVITES

Pep Band - The pep band is a highly visible activity which participates at not only Boy's and Girl's Basketball, but also Wrestling and Boy's and Girl's Hockey. The group is also responsible for music at the playoff games for all three sports. The group averages around 120-150 members for each event. Student's receive points for lettering by attending events. The group is also a wonderful way for student's to socialize and make new friends who share their excitement about band. The primary director for this group is Mr. Pasquerella.

Jazz Bands - These ensembles give the students an opportunity to study and perform jazz music in big band jazz format.. There are three levels of jazz ensembles. Jazz 3 is directed by Mr. Pasquerella, Jazz 2 is directed by Mr. Harloff and Jazz 1 is directed by Mr. Henry. Jazz 3 rehearses for one night a week and Jazz 2 & Jazz 1 rehearse two nights a week. These groups perform two concerts, (one in January and one in March). Jazz 2 and Jazz 1 both participate in a regional jazz festival. Jazz 1 continues through to the end of the year as the instrumental group for Bravo.

Percussion Ensemble - This ensemble gives the percussionists within the band program and opportunity to play more difficult and interesting music. The repertoire ranges from classical percussion, to modern, to Stomp style and anything in between. The group rehearses two nights a week and has a concert in March. The primary director for this group is Mr. Greene.

Colorguard - This group entails performers from the present marching band and future marching band color guard. The group is a highly motivated and dedicated group with emphasis on dance and equipment (rifles & flags) technique. The Head director of the guard are Amy Powers.

LETTERING Lettering in the instrumental music department is one way to reward students who participate a lot in the activities. The following is the lettering policy for Eastview Band.

In order to receive a band letter, all instrumental music members must earn 36 points, including all possible points for concert performance in Category I and 12 points for pep band in Category III.

Service oriented activities to enhance the band program (12 PEP BAND POINTS REQUIRED OF ALL 9th AND 12TH GRADE STUDENTS)

Pep Band (2 points/game)…6 Pep Band dates will be REQUIRED*
Uniform crew during Marching Band (10 points)
Assist with the music library through year if not a student aid (1pt/hr)
Organizational assistance (i.e.: clean and straighten instrument room)

Category IV

Concert attendance outside Eastview High School
Must be at a collegiate or professional level in the instrumental music field
Turn in a program for verification (Must be turned in within 5 days!!!)
Rock concerts are not acceptable for consideration, please don’t ask.
1 point per concert/maximum of 5

STUDENT PARTICIPATION

Student participation in the many different ensembles and activities has proven to be beneficial. Not only do student's have the benefits of playing wonderful music, but also students who are in music are good students. Many of the students who participate in band are in the National Honor Society, Advanced Placement classes, and many other activities outside of the music program including debate, speech, danceline, cheerleading and many athletics.
